What gap do you guys use for doors and windows ?

R.O.-windows 1''wider x1/2'' taller

     -doors       1''wider x 1'' taller
Some will prefer larger r.o. for insulation purposes and variation in framing quality
I use low expansion around the unit to seal.

Your window/door supplier should also give you specs for rough openings.

thanks

I was going with 1" all around . Reason for asking was , suppliers ordering format changes some of the sizes due to width to height ratios . Not much , just a 1/2 depending on ordered size . if the rain stops today , we'll be starting the framing and figured i should maybe ask what others are doing . I'll be in charge of over seeing the framing , so it should be plumb and level

in the pnw  the rough opening was 1/2 in bigger then the door or window  20 year in remodeling and new construction 19 years windows and siding co

During my working days it never changed that 1/2" both ways was best excepting special circumstance  like poor material or workmanship.

Being i'm building it i could go smaller , but i want the larger area to put spray foam in it . the low expanding type . stuffing them gaps with fiberglass or trying to fit the tip in-between the closer gaps can be fun

If you're using commercial doors and windows with flange attachments you can get in trouble with the openings being too wide for fasteners to attach properly. You don't want to have to angle the fasteners to get a good grip on the framing.

A foamed small gap around the openings is overall more energy efficient than a wider one just because that means you have more well insulated wall space versus a lesser insulated gap around the framing. Biggest advantage to foam around openings is preventing infiltration more than r-value..

I was always taught 1" all the way around. On pre-hung doors I would check plumb on the front of the door also, and that it swings and closes right, just in case. And only use minimally expanding foam around jambs. I never did it, but have heard horror stories about using the high expansion stuff. :o
