Magic, my Grandpa told me that when they were little Great Grandma made them lard sandwiches- and they thought they were good! Times were tough for sure😬
The lard helps the bread go down.. much like butter. Some salt and pepper, or today's ketchup would help too. Wasn't too bad, if'n you were hungry and that was all that was available.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind trying one. Just to see what they experienced. They didn't have any complaints about them.

starchy carbs from the bread, and highest storage form of calories in the fat.  It would not make sense to throw it out if you are otherwise starving.  the excess calories only become a problem when folks stop using their hands and feet to get work done.  (he says as he types on the computer).   ;)

butter sandwiches are similar, and I had those with sugar on them.  we now eat things to have the taste and consistency of real butter, but save calories and use veg. fat and spread easier.

I grew up in a house where butter substitutes were treated with extreme prejudice. ;D My dad said that other stuff was 'like a licking window pane' and was just made from oils. He wouldn't allow it in the house (farm boy also).
My wife grew up in a house that was on the other side of the coin and if I recall it was our first 'disagreement' when we got married and we finally agreed to disagree. We had both in our house but I never touched "that stuff'. She used butter for baking, but for nothing else.
I don't know when it happened but sometime around 15 years ago, maybe more, that 'other stuff' stopped living in our fridge. She had been reading a lot of healthy living stuff and finally realized what was in it and started reading labels. She never admitted she was "not right', but she stopped getting that 'other stuff' and now we are looking for locally made butter (well, I am anyway) that we can afford on a regular basis instead of the store bought stuff.

As far as the ORIGINAL intent of this post. My 450 likes the full process (choke/prime/ 2 pulls/choke off, then start on the third) when it's cold, then none of that just one pull to restart once warm. After 4 hours of cooling I might have to do it again. My 562 likes the full routine when cold (3 pulls total), but on restarts I set the choke then shut it off for high idle and give one pull and off we both go. I have yet to use the saw in very cold weather, so that may add a new dimension.

Two wives , both had a thing with imitation butter .One with imitation bacon made of parts and pieces from turkeys . No more ,never again .I buy Land-o - Lakes 3 or 4 pounds at a time ,comes from a cow not corn .The bacon comes from a pig .It might have killed my grand parents but they were in their 90's when they passed .The cows and pigs eat the corn and turn it into milk and pork .In a way are just "middle men ".

Stay away from those oleo margarine women, Al😁

Still do not know what a 'grit' is.
My 362 gets choke for a cold start.  Two or three pulls and it fires then choke off and it starts next pull.  If I shut it for just a little while and still hot it starts first pull no choke.  If it sits a while and cools it is back to choke and two pulls then no choke start.

In defense of our southern neighbors corn meal mush if you let it set up then sliced and fried is not bad at all .

Magicman

Slicing and frying day old Cornbread is not bad either, especially if it's good Cornbread to begin with.

I have tried to eat some cornbread that did not measure up to PatD's Cornbread.

So it's like polenta?
Another trick for you old timers. When you stop the saw stay on the switch with the finger and put the switch down to start position then lay down the saw. when grabbing the saw you just pull and she starts. you don't even check or touch the starter switch. one pull and working.
After 20 times it goes automatically and you will do it for the rest of your life.

I tried this today and it didnt work for my 026 or 034.

teakwood

Why? a warmed up saw in normal working conditions should always start with one pull.

needless to say that if the saw cools down over hours then you need to do cold start procedure with choke again

Like I've said many a time .Chainsaws are like women .Those might be "sisters " but they are not identical twins .I've got a modified Stihl 038 Mag that takes about 10 pulls on a cold start but almost always after only one .--no I'm not going to fiddle with a carb because it runs like a scalded ape .That's a 72 cc that runs like a 92 and yes it can be done . 8)

I have tried the "new choke" start - doesn't work on my saws, they'll only start if I u
se the choke as needed.
