So ... a week or so ago I was searching about a timber framing topic on Google, it brought me here, and I found some really helpful information on an unrelated topic that I didn't know I was curious about. I came back after finding more time to study it out, and low and behold, I cannot find it. The topic was about joint planning (not removing too much wood to decrease strength etc) that went way beyond the general rule of thumbs (tenon size is 1/4 of timber size, peg size is half of tenon size etc) of course it was Jim Rogers who was writing it, and if anyone can post a link to a similar thread that would be great. Also, trying to figure out how the issue of centered joints in TFHQ plans affects timbers that are imperfect.

If you have imperfect timbers you can still use square rule joinery with centered tenons and mortises. It's just a little harder to layout and cut then standard 2" off set joints.
You'd have to draw a straight center line down the imperfect timber and layout off of that.
