I got a wierd call the other day... (actually, I called him).

I do most of my sawing/wood related stuff with a friend, anyways, his girlfriend called me at work the other day, her manager at her old job had called her because he heard about my sawing adventures from one of her old co-workers.

turns out he has a few cherry trees still standing he wants to have taken down for a garage next fall.  He told me he was looking for somebody to cut and dry his lumber for him, or he'd prefer to give someone the logs and they give him a bunch of cut cherry in return.

I told him that he might be able to find somebody to do that, but I'd be real suprised since you never know what you have until you open it up, or he's got veneer logs (I didn't tell him that part).

I told him I'd saw them up if he gave me two of the logs, but he was on his own to dry them out  :)

There's a fine line between turning firewood into beautiful things and beautiful things into firewood.

We've done that a couple of times.

What we do is scale and buy the logs at market price and then sale the customer the lumber he wants at our price and then settle the difference.  This way each party receives equitable compensation for their stuff.

I barter for many of my logs. Lumber, a little welding job, I even built a cedar chest for a decent pile of walnut logs. I don't see anything wrong with it, but expect to come out on the short end of the stick every once in awhile.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
