I'm looking at sharpeners to sharpen my 8" jointer knives but I would also like to use this to sharpen chisels.  I was looking at the grizzley G2790 Universal Knife Grinder.  From what I understand the sharpeners that have the same rotation as a typical bench grinder will not work for the jointer knives because they will produce a hollow grind.  Does anyone have any experience with this sharpener or could recommend a sharpener for my application?

There was a discussion on these kinds of sharpeners not too long ago, IIRC. I have the Grizzly floor model and can't say anything good about it. I also have the Makita mentioned above and have had real good luck with it. The shortcoming of it, though, is it can only do up to 15" blades and even at that, it's hard to steady them at the ends.

Have been using the Grizzly knife grinder for years to do my planer and jointer knives. Works pretty well, and I've been happy with it. The price is good.

Nick,
I just purchased one three weeks ago and have sharpened almost everything in the shop!
It has a learning curve but once you play for a while, it does a fantastic job. It was the only one with ability to do 20" planer knives so that's what I basically got it for. If you don't have knives that long, I'd end up going with something with a water bath - it's easy to blue the steel on chisels if you aren't careful. Devan

I'm not going to need to sharpen my planer knives because my powermatic planer has a built in sharpener.  I will only need this sharpener to do my 8" joiner knives and would hope to use it for chisels also.  It's looking like the grizzley isn't going to work as well to do the chisels since it doesn't have a water bath, I was thinking that earlier but I wasn't sure.  Thanks for all the input!

Hi Nick:
You might want to take a look at a Tormek sharpener.  Water bath, low speed.  Scary sharp when done right.  Might be a bit pricey though!
Don't dream it, be it.
