Weedeater II

  I saw CKTate's post about weedeaters, well I have a Craftsman push weedeater that I can't keep string on. Any suggestions on a good and tough brand of string that will last.

Maybe you should buy a chainsaw and quit using the weedeater to cut  trees.  ;D :D :D

Hi Tony,

Of course alot depends on how you use the trimmer, ie; do you spend alot of time with the line slapping hard, abrasive objects or do you go gently around them, but a quality line does make a huge difference.

I use Stihl brand line on my FS250 when I use the trimmer head. It`s black and I think it`s .130 diameter. It`s not very supple but it is very tough. An area that would literally take me twenty refills with Shakespear line can now be done twice with the same two pieces of the Stihl line. The Stihl line may seem expensive initially but I find it to be cheap when comparing it`s longevity to a few other brands that I`ve used. There are no doubt other excellent brands but this is what I`ve found.

How you store the line is also important. Keep it out of the sun. I`ve also heard normally reasonable people swear that soaking the line in water before use makes it last longer, although I can`t see the reason why.

I second the Stihl trimmer line.  According to my dealer, Stihl makes their own line for quality control purposes.  I use the orange 0.90 size around my house.  I've been using the same roll for a couple years now.

I hate bump head trimmers, I put a grassgator on my trimmer. It lets you use either .095 or .110(?).  It seems not to eat string like a bump head when you hit something solid. If you lose the line, replacement is as easy cutting a 12"-18" length, folding it in 1/2, and inserting it into the trimmer head.

Guess we don't all experience the same results, which is okay.
I am very happy with my Stihl bump-head. Have loaded it at least 3, or maybe 4 times and have only once experienced any problem with it not feeding the line out (as long as I bump it when the rpm is in the higher range). With this head, I usually only have to stop trimming when I run out of fuel.

I used to have the kind that would require the threading of short lengths, and tired of that routine.

Now, I suspect there is a place for all varieties of 'heads'.
