Howdy, I just bought a slightly used logging winch from my father. a V4000 from fransguard. Its all hooked up to the tractor which is a Pasquali 492 (42hp articulating tractor)

I know you need to cut down PTO shafts. I've measured between the detents on both pto stubs. I have a measurement of 17" where the PTO shaft locks on to the tractor and winch. The shaft it came with is 22" from the locking points. So I would need to cut down the shaft by about 5 1/2 inches correct?

The issue I have is if I cut down this shaft it only leaves me like 1 3/4" long tube between the PTO shaft U joints.

I can try to post some photos with my phone.

So what do I do here? I could fabricate new 3-point hitch arms and top link that are about 10" longer than the originals or can I run this thing with a 1.75" triangular tube in pto shaft?

Hope this all makes sense.

I just ran into a similar problem with a side mower I built. With a short shaft you will not be able to raise winch up and down without either shaft coming apart or collapsing all the way and damaging PTO or winch input bearing. I extended my hookup links so I could use longer PTO shaft and solved problem. I think that would be your best solution.

What tractor are you planning to hook up to? (edit: my bad, mis-understood it came from the pasquali)

It seems like I remember cutting half the distance from each side of the shaft. It has been a while. I may well be wrong.

For sure one should do at least what SunnyHillFarm suggests.

After attached to your tractor and before connecting the PTO shaft, then run the 3ph arms up and down and measure what the distance change is with present configuration of top arm placement and length to decide the min/max length needs to be. Best hole placement of the top arm should limit this length variation.

Did I mess up thinking it's 5" from each side. Oops!

Currently the tubes are about 8" so if I cut them down 2.75 each will they be long enough still?

I get some confused with what you call "sides".  :wink_2: :wink_2:
Measure the distance between the two PTO shaft stubs, from the tractor and the v4000. Then you have your PTO shaft that has two universal joints that both have some length to them. In between is the telescoping shaft that needs to be as long as possible but never longer than the total distance available.  Cut equal amount off both shafts so you get the most possible sliding shaft inside the other.

If you look at the photo I posted earlier..and I'll post it again. If I simply cut these two triangular tubes to fit together and not bottom out I'll only have like a 2" triangular tube left in each side.

The only choice you have that I can see is to get your winch further away from your tractor. How you do it is up to you. When raising and lowering winch distance between PTO and winch input is going to change.Like Beenthere says raise winch up and down and measure.

I am of no help. But i am amazed that a pasquali made it all the way to the US!

There was one here in Chesterville.
My boss grand father had one too.
I wonder if some arms from another tractor would work.
Looks like they would have to be heated up and bent.

This is the beast

Andries

Such a good looking machine!
For logging, some short forks and a grapple or a FrostBite grapple would make it a perfect logging machine.
Got some good ground clearance under there?

How much PTO shaft length change (min-max) is there between lowest and highest position?

I delivered parts to a garage, and I saw one of those tractors.
It did not have a loader on it.
