One thing to consider: yes, getting green lumber fastened can help prevent movement during drying. In this case all the 1/2 cants will want to bow inward at the middle so you won't get the benefit of cancelling out stresses. In the end, it may not be a deal breaker to have some bow in the wall though.

I just got done sawing some red pine that's been cut for 3 years now.  Located in the Northeast.  Sitting in a pile mostly shaded.  Some logs certainly had bore holes. And some had some soft wood toward the outside.  But for the most part I was happy with the lumber they produced.  Not much went to the burn piles.   And the bugs got into the wood the first year, I don't think the additional age changed much of the bugs.  Thanks.

The bark makes the difference.  Bark holds moisture and also bugs go after the cambium so removing/debarking is labor intensive but it will prolong the life of the logs.

You're spot on with that Lynn - with EWP if you peel the bark once it begins to slip off you can wipe out the grubs while they're still in the cambium.

I cut a decent red pine down a couple of summers ago to get some beams for my barn project. I used the butt of the tree right away but the top half sat before I cut the rest of it for siding. I'd guess the pine sawyers were munching away on it within 6 weeks at most. They don't take long at all to find anything I cut up here.
