I have made a myriad of mistakes in my learning curve resulting in a couple of dulled blades, several blade throwings, and one broken blade, so when the blade bound up and killed the engine about 1 inch from the end of the last cut on a walnut log I was slabbing, my initial response was to grit my teeth, utter a choice word and wonder what the hades I had done to cause that.  Come to find out, I hit a large nail that was a good 5 inches into the trunk and that had been about 11 feet up from the ground when the tree was standing.  At least it wasn't really my fault that time.  1 inch from finishing the log.  I guess you are never home free......

Ive hit nails, fence wire, steel posts but the worst was a handmade bridge spike.  about 10" inside the log.

Simon from the Peterson stand came over with his metal detector and found the remander of the log full of steel waiting to cost us lots so we stopped and abandond the log.

The guy I was working with has found wire high up where the electric company strung along trees instead of puting up posts.

best deal is to always have a metal detector for each log unless you know for sure that it is clean.
