Our 02 Dodge Cummins is currently at the dealership having  new injector and lift pumps installed.  It started "falling down".  I put in a new fuel filter and that didn't help any.  The lift pump was below specs for I think flow and the injector pump was below specs for pressure.  I think that's how it is.  I'm just glad it has the 5 year 100,000 mile warranty on the powertrain 8) 8) 8) or we'd of had an expensive bill on truck with only 69,027 miles :(.  This is the only trouble we've had with it other than a shorted out trailer light wire harness.  I told the dealer NO when they told me it needed a new exhaust system for the low low price of $500.00

I have an '03 Dodge Cummins and I have been warned about the lift pumps failing. No failure yet but I only have 40K on it, I need to get out more :D

I was in a Chev dealership when they had a diesel p/u pulled in. They looked at it and told the guy the lift pump was gone. He said 'whaddya mean it's gone. It is brand new." They said "No, it is GONE" It had been stolen while he was shopping for groceries at SuperStore :D

That engine was originally developed as a stationary for gas compressors in the sixties.

I've always heard it was developed through a joint venture between Case and Cummins as an engine for big farm tractors, but I don't know what the real answer is.

Onan developed and designed the dodge diesel, funny thing is they offered it to ford first and they turned up thier noses at it.

Now if you want real cummins power see these guys

Corley,

You need to install a fuel pressure gauge to monitor the lift pump presure. It was the first upgrade I did to my 02. The lack of fuel pressure feeding the injection pump is what caused the premature failure of the injection pump. Diesel fuel is the only lubricant the injection has. No lube, shortened life.

I had a pic a while back of a hummer hitting a new dodge barely touched the dodge but with the hummer it crunched it up to the firewall.  And caved in the windshield. Tough rigs.

Reminds me of an accident I was involved in 25 years ago: After the fact I was listening to the bystanders remarking at all of the damage to the front end of my Mercedes-Benz while the Oldsmobile only got a beat up bumper out of the clash. Meanwhile the owners of the Olds' were not in the conversation because they were in the ambulance  :o

I have one like that ... that is  91 3/4 ton 4 X 4  I have a little over 400,000 kilometers on it ... I did change the tranny on it last winter . The only thing I dont like of it is the ride ... remember when Dodge named them Power Wagon ....  ride like a Wagon would be a better way of naming them ....  :)
You best have a good back to ride them .

Well, it's a moot point for me, now.  Passed by yesterday and the truck was gone.  Probably for the best, though.  I'll just keep plugging along with the Ford till I can afford something a little newer and less worn out.  Sure would like to get away from the less than 10 mpg thing.  Fortunately, I don't have to drive it much.

I work for a transportation company that uses 10-15 hostlers that have the same Cummins engines sold in the Dodge pickup.  These hostlers run 24/7 hooking sets of semi trailers, and the kids driving them are hard on them, but they keep running with few problems.  That was proof enough for me to buy a new Dodge last year.
