I bought a Crescent 26" planer this morning. Best I can tell it is a 1920's model with variable speed feed. He wanted $800 for it. I got it for $650 with his wife standing next to him saying take it. It needs some work but  all the levers are free and everything turns. The bed is nice and flat with some surface rust. Here are some pictures:

Did I pay too much???

I know some of you have haul'n stuff like this away for free but finding these oldies are hard to find locally where I am from.

From another point of view I only payed .22 cents a lb for it ::) ::)

  I'd say ya done good.  ;D ;D

I agree with Harold, you done good.Anybody that would ever tell you that you paid too much for something after you've bought it should be hit hard and fast with a cattle prod in my opinion  :)

He can lift it with his backhoe. It is 24 miles from my dad's farm. I can get my Uncle to haul it for the cost of gas.

I have a 10 HP motor form an old silo unloader I can put on it.

sounds like a good deal to me  congrates on the new used planer

Tom

Sounds like you got a decent price on a whopper of planer .........and to top it off, you want it too. :D

Sometimes you don't have to justify stuff.   When asked why I have that big old truck, I answer, "I wanted it".   It's kinda hard for someone to argue with that.

I don't imagine there will be too  many boards that you can't handle now.   If it trys to choke, then get a bigger motor.  It looks like it'll handle anything you throw at it.

If Blades are a problem,  I think that TMS (Talledaga Machine Sales) has a department that makes planer, chipper and hog blades.  It would sure be convenient if Menominee Saw could make them, eh?  :)

nice find

I use a little tabletop delta planer, got a killer deal on it, but man, it makes for slow progress when trying to plane a bunch of boards.

There's an old PTO drive planer back where I grew up, i've been prying for that thing, then I'll need something with a PTO on it!

Jason,

KIRK ALLEN bought one like that from me. THat is a good price. I had a 24" in my shop just like that. Sold it for $800 several years ago. Circa 1905-1920's. It weighs 3300lbs give or take. They made one like that with two shaper spindles on the outfeed table. Quite slick although the belting looked threatening. I can send you the info. from my 1918 Cresent catalog on that unit. E-mail me and I'll shoot it over to you.    bethnreid@aol.com

Reid,

I found information on this planer at this site:

http://www.owwm.com/

Very nice site for the old iron wood working machines.

Jason,

What does it have bearings?  What does it have for cutter heads, the old square type?

Jason_WI

D.

It has babit bearings. I lifted on the cutterhead shaft with a pry bar and it didn't move so I assume that is good  ;D.

It has a 2 knife square cutterhead.  I hear these had a tendancy to kick back ???

I am mainly going to use it to plane wide boards and only plane the smaller stuff when I have my 12" RBI setup with the moulding head.

Tom

They not only have a habit of kicking back, but are notorious for "eating" hands too.  Be careful.

Jason_WI

Tom,

The round safety cutterheads will eat hands also, just in smaller pieces :-[ :o

I am going to make a dust collection hood for it so the hands issue should be a non issue. I am more worried about the exposed rotating shafts winding up shirts and pants  :-\

I belive what Tom was saying is that the square heads are known for actually pulling you in as it eats.
At least that's what I've read.

Jason_WI

Kinda like the old corn pickers.  I can see how that could happen with the square edges pulling stuff in. :o :o

I don't plan on sticking my hands in any rotating machines any time soon. I grew up on a farm and still help my dad on the farm on weekends. Power is always removed when working on equipment especially if something plugs up.

FELLAS FELLAS, no don't scare the man! :( Planers "capture" the board, the notorious ones are the jointers when YOU are holding the board. This is not an issue with this machine, trust me I have run many machines like this and this vintage. The only concern is are there currently servicable knives on the head? Look up "secondary grind"on OWWM site, with a 2 knife head this will help. You don't want to have to have knives made for it trust me $$. Secondly, is the non-segmented infeed roll worn where it contacts the wood. Over time and with much use the center of the roll tends to wear smooth. The machine Kirk got looked like the infeed roll was near new condition, so in it's life it was not used excessively. They are nice simple servicable machines and you don't feel bad if they get a little rusty outback under the shed roof between uses. Pull off the tarp, shoot the table with silicon and jamb those boards at it.

Did you get the information I sent Jason?

I think you did excellent even if it was going to scrap metal. I have been wanting a large planer to finish off my bigger mantle pieces, but, I can not afford them new (that is for sure $3000+) and have no where to store or use them. At the worse yours might make a couple of nice welding tables. I think you are going to have fun  8)

Jason_WI

Reid,

The infeed rooler is still has good grooves in the center of the roll. The center of the bed is not worn either. These are the first two things I checked.

Thanks for the scanned pages. These will come in handy.

Dad has an old planer that's like that or similar.  I believe it has a 30 inch head.  He was talking about selling it and some other old stuff.

The adjustment hand wheels for the infeed down pressure roller were rusted tight on the planer. I used Rust Reaper on one wheel and sprayed liquid wrench on the other. The next day I tried to move the wheel I sprayed with liquid wrench - wouldn't budge not even with the persuation of a 18" pipe wrench.

On the wheel I used Rust Reaper on I was able to loosen it up by hand - no pipe wrench needed. Applied RR to the other hand wheel that had liquid wrench on it and I was able to move it by hand that night.

Rust Reaper works.

Looks like it was sitting outside. I can imagine the rust as a result.
