Ga_Boy called me a week or so ago and asked me if I had a way to saw up wide logs, me being the obliging individual that I am replied "certainly".

So I fixed up my alaskan-hybrid jig for my 42" bar:

Mark trimmed off the top of the logs with his Peterson, that is the absolute way to go when using an alaskan, that first cut is always a pain with an alaskan setup.

we dug into it, and ended up with this:

I have a winch setup that I copied from Will Malloof's book, Mark cranked the winch, and I wrestled the saw, I really have no idea how malloof did that by himself.  It may have worked with a smaller log, but these were pretty big.  The wood cut pretty hard through the swirls and all of that stuff, some of the wood came out very nice.

By the time we finished up, we were getting pretty good at it, but we both were glad we had finished.

here's a picture of the crotch figure, kinda hard to see at 400 pixels, but it's there!

Now that you've got some nice thick slabs cut, what is the next step? What will you make from them?

A guy had Mark saw them up for him, and Mark had me help him.  I doubt that I'll see them again :)

Cool Slabs  :)

If you are going to be doing a lot of that you can even mount the chainsaw on the Peterson frame. You still have to push the thing, but you are pushing the mill at waist height not the Alaskan at knee height.

Whew! Helps to pull that sheet off eh?
Real nice grain!
Did the owner say what his plans for it was?

We were talking about the feasability of getting a custom made bar and a custom made sprocket so you could power a chain with the peterson powerhead.

It probably wouldn't be that hard to do, but i'm not sure how large a chain you'd have to use to be safe, you don't want to stretch the chain in two with all that HP available.  but it would sure make doing this stuff much easier.

I've also toyed around with the idea of making a frame to mount the saw where it would roll on the track of my bandmill, but I'd have to do an underhung setup of some sort in order to utilize the extra width my bar has over my saw track, my saw track is 30" from rail to rail, the 42" bar will cut a 35" log with the way I have it setup.

Hey Dan,

Again thanks for the help.  I still have a 32" Red Oak Log with two hearts to slab up, let me know when you want that job.  I got a few custom cabinet makers that want to know when  they will be ready.

These cortch slabs are for a customer, he said he is going to make table tops out of them, he called me and asked if I could do the job and of course I say "sure can" for a price!!!!

I had a great time working with Dan, this is our third job together, the first two were loging.  Now I got to get Dan driving that Peterson.

Still got two logs from the same trees as the crotches to mill for this guy, then got to get to 10 small logs for another customer.

I spent a entire day driving Southern Maryland picking up these logs and crothches, it is nice to have a few cusotm jobs lined up and waiting to get to.
