JD, how's the cherry up your way? In my area is severely infected with black knot.

There are several veneer buyers in PA.  One is Global around Liberty, PA,  and another is Pioneer.  Over in Coudersport, there's another buyer who treats loggers pretty good.

Northern Logger has all sorts of guys looking for logs.  And, you can contact the DCNR in PA to see who is buying logs.  They don't know all the guys, but it can be a good start.

wiam:

What does Champeau do with it? Where do they resell it?

Does Stanley Robinson still operate a yard in that area? Last I knew TRG had a yard in Danville that was doing well.

Nice veneer cherry is hard to find in your area. It was always nice to come across some though. I saw one cherry tree in Stowe this summer that I just had to stop and rub. Tall, round, about 25-26" dbh, very rare in northern New England.

Cherry and the darker woods like walnut seem to have fallen out of the good graces of the American consumer. Does this seem true in other parts of the country?

Ron Wenrich

Open grained species have fallen out of the graces of the public.  Red oak and ash are harder to market.  Closed grain species can be sold without too much problem.  Hard maple, birch and hickory, as well as some tulip poplar.  5 years ago you couldn't sell birch or hickory as veneer.

Cherry veneer still sells well, but has dropped off the highs of a few years ago.  That spike was caused by European demand for a replacement to rainforest woods.

Walnut prices have remained steady for the past 20 years.  No increase or decrease.  You can always sell nice walnut.

They're starting to use embedded polymers in maple, and birch to mimic tropical hardwoods such as ebony. It's beginning in northern Europe and it's comming to the US market in time. One product is Kebony. The process was developed in 1992 by Dr Mark Schneider, President of Woodtech Industries. A company formed by the local university (UNB). Mark is a Professor of Wood Technology at UNB.

Black Bear,  It is Stanley that yards it for Champeau.  I think they have mills in Canada.  It goes on Canadian trucks.  Log buyer:  Joey Goudreau  evening #  819-876-7375

Champeau does have mills in Quebec, but I thought they were a dowel and square mill that also produces some specialty products like pool cues. When I was cutting for Moffatt we would send maple there from time to time.

Since I have been in Maine I have learned that Maine and New Brunswick are very much involved in the development of wood composites. The composites could provide a market for all of the low grade hardwood found throughout New England and the Maritimes.

On a side note: UNB will be losing one of their forest operations professors to UMaine. I believe Jeff Benjamin is headed for UMaine next fall.

Never met Mr Benjamin. But, I see enrollment in Forestry schools across the country are declining. It's becoming increasingly hard to get a entry level forestry job. Companies are hiring mostly forest technicians/technologists for the field work, Geography/Cartogrophers for GIS and an RPF to shuffle/sign paperwork. They no longer have a Forestry undergrad program at U of T, since 1994 I think.

Alberta, British Columbia mostly. Just check out the Canadian Forests website in the Jobs section of the forum. There's hardly a posting for the east unless its a professor type or Forestry Analyst.

i just got done cutting 60 acres of timber, fair share of cherry, on a share basis with a logger, and near the end we found a guy new in his own business, but for sure experienced and knew what he was buying, who paid us "good", better than the 4 mills we were taking it to.  i'm near scranton and I would think he would drive some. contact me for more info.   I kept exact records of $/Kft so I could at least estimate who was giving us/me the best deal.

he graded and paid right on the landing, if we didn't like what he said no problem.  but even on the saw logs we for sure did better and he was the nicest guy to deal with, NO OVERHEAD, logs shipped overseas.

i know i asked a bunch of questions here earlier in the year and thanks everyone for helping me.  we are all done now and i am quite satisfied how it all worked out.

re: cherry veneer - is it really veneer?  everyone points to a nice tree and thinks its' veneer, but most of them don't cut out that way, i found that real veneer, ie. >$3/ft was not that common.  Of course, on this cut, I tried to leave many of the pretty ones there.
