Doug, your  thinking of the New Madrid fault.  I live about a hour and a half from New Madrid MO where the fault runs near town...  It gives us a shimmy every now and then...  Last one was around 4 if I remember...

I shut the door to the house at the exact moment the tremor arrived and thought "I don't know my own strength!"   :-[ ::)

I've been to a couple web sites dealing with the New Madrid fault, where they talk about the damage possible and it's quite impressive.  When asked to type in your zip code to see what kind of effect you would fill if the big one hit.   They all pretty much agree that here we would feel it , but there wouldn't be any damage.  It shouldn't even disturb any what-nots.  I sure hope the "experts" are right on this one. ;)  I've felt them things before and didn't really like it. :)

New Madrid is a scary fault for sure. We get Earthquakes all the time ranging from 5 to 7 - nothing much comes of them. Because we get them all the time, the chances of a monster is pretty slim.  I think there have been 4 or 5 in the last 18 months.

Same is true for volcanos - we have 7 active ones if I recall correctly - nothing serious most of the the time, just interesting tourist destinations. For example, Arenal Volcano, which is near us, is a sand mountain (Arena = Sand), sort of hard to build up a lot of pressure.

It does make for a different life for a person from the Northeast.

So, how did I end up here anyway?

I dunno Fred and Harold.  All those low level quakes may be those volcanoes waking up and getting ready to spew forth.  Better get to sawing up that forest while it is still there! ;D

As long as the quakes don't fill Lake Arenal, we be okey dokey.  ;) ;)

  I HEAR, there are Peacock Bass in Arenal Lake. Ever watch them high priced Fisherguys catch 'em in Brazil, and other places ???  ;) ;) ;)

Yes mi amigo, there are guapote in that there lake. (guapote - Rainbow bass), they are big, and they are mean.

But, being lazy, I am building a guapote pond this year.

So, how did I end up here anyway?

First Earthquake ::)
My first one was out in Orange county CA I was up on the 11th floor in a hotel :o  Woke me up at 3.30 in the morning, wondering why a train was going by outside :o  Problem was the hotel across the street was coming in and out view ::)  It was a 7.2 out in the desert ;D  It was cool watching the power transformers pop with a blue flash as the quake moved across the horizon.  I could not decide what to do I was confused, saw people leaving the building, but I was too lazy, so fell back asleep and then a 5. something aftershock hit. Then I got up.  Seemed like everything was making sound and moving for the next day or so ::)
