Well the local track ahd diesel drags Saturday. Kind of a poor turnout compared to the last time I wen't 3 or 4 years ago but it was still fun.

Lets see the most impressive things.

How about a 6V-71 Detroit, in an older Ford pickup, stripped down, rear tires where right behind the cab, no bed. Twin turboed, Nitrous, Turning 4500 RPM's!! When he pulled in to the burnout box and lit em off it sounded more like a gasser than a detroit, ran about 120 in the 1/4

Or his buddy who had about the same setup, only 3 nitrous switches. He had his in a dragster, old style with the motor in front. He did 140 in the 1/4.

And the big trucks, well there was Freightliner Cabover there with a big Cummins in it. BIG SMOKE!! He was running mid 13's But more impressive than that was watching him light off all 8 drive tires in the burnout box and making the white smoke roll!!! And he was chirping the tires on the first shift!!!

Now since it was bracket racing it really wasn't a true test of who had the fastest pickup, but during time trials there where two Dodges there that where running strong, one was an older 3/4 ton Dodge and a newer one ton. One of the fords had some juice turned to it and he was making some impressive runs to.

Just about all the other trucks I would say where stock and ran pretty close times.

All in all it was fun day of sniffing diesel smoke. Oh though the coolest thing was the Kenworth Jet truck. You just can't describe it!! 212MPH in the 1/4

Finally got the pics and vids off of the phone

Should have taken more pics and less vids.
The links that end in 3g2 are videos and will play in real player
the vids are small, and short, 15seconds so they should take long to download even on dialup
I just made a page for them since I didn't want to upload them to several differant sites

as my car is a member in good standing of jackstand racing, part of me is jelous you went out to the track.

i didn't make the spring season, but i'm hoping for the nice weather we get here in the fall.

they have a big rig showdown out here twice a year, pretty cool to watch those bigrigs bracket racing, even though bracket racing is the most lame spectator sport ever

oh oh When and where Dan!!

I can see a road trip in my future. Bracket racing may be lame but it does have a place.  Not every one can afford to build a car for straight heads up racing. Besides it gives you a chance to hone your skills

maryland international raceway in budd's creek, MD  I was wrong, it used to be in the spring and the fall, now it's only in May.

i know bracket racing has it's place, but it's super boring to watch it.  I don't like the sportsman tree either.  go pro or go home!

there was an "open comp" thing that was picking up some steam in the mustang circuit a while back which was bracket racing on a pro tree.  it was pretty cool.  it still doesn't beat both leaving at the same time, though.

I run my car in a stock type class for the local ford event every year, i've gone from super competitive to quite a ways down on the list because of $$$ and time, and a little bit of knowhow....  heads up is very far from cheap, even in the entry level stuff.

I broke a lot of parts a few years ago, kind of put me out of the game, and I sort of lost heart :(  I bent an 8.8 axle housing, broke my transmissions shift forks twice, and then the synchros started going out.  so I spent a bunch of cash to get the 8.8 replaced and built up, and "upgraded" my transmission.

Dan,

I can't believe that an old 6V Road Oiler would hold 4500 :o :o :o :o

I was running the rack on one once that ran away...couldn't shut her down...wide open for about 30 seconds and she was spittin' parts on the floor :D :D :( :(
Why not just 1 pain free day?

Quartlow

I would be willing to bet the one that ran off wasn't balanced and blue printed either.

We turned em 3,000 all the time and never had em come apart, not much further to 4500.
Soon as I get a cable to get the video off of my phone I'll post a link top them, not the greatest but the sound is good.  :D

Dan, most of those are running alky now.  There are very few diesels anymore.  it's a shame.  I think they should have stayed diesel.  Nothing like watching the smoke pouring out of the stack.

i dunno, i think the alky stuff is awesome, better for the envirnment too.

i used to go to truck and tractor pulls all the time when I still lived in WV, but there aren't enough hicks where I live now for that to be popular.

We still run smokers at the Canfield fair, just not as many of them.

You know you could move  :D :D

4 wheel drive mind you.
I saw a dodge the other night that had so much wheel speed he couldn't budge the sled.

They should run em on biodiesel, good for the environment, you get a measure of smoke back into the sport and with all that used fryer oil burning they'd probably sell a lot of concessions.  :D

Dan, I am running in to the same problem here in the suburbs.  Not enough hicks.  I can't even find a garden tractor pulling league around here.  Too many city slickers.

Quartlow  , I will have to look up my old deroit product guide  but I think the 4-53 might be too long for my pickup  and then there is the extra weight .   I was thinking the 3-53 would have enough power to weight too get me good  mileage  and great sound .  I was looking for a 4-71 for the cab forward though.

Ok Dan,,,I'll keep my eyes open. What kind of pickup? I have seen them in older chevy trucks, mid 70's era

I guess I should not be so picky ,it's not like they are makin them every day now.     I did ride in a 70s chevy with a 3cylinder detroit out of an old Oliver 99  .  Made an ausome truck out of it.    Too bad GM didn't put a small detroit in a pickup.

Well if nothing else,,,,,they make a lot of noise, and you can always tell where had it parked since they mark their territory like a dog  :D  :D  :D

Ya but its a good noise !!!!  Not like the raddletrap comeapart motors they put in the dodge trucks .   My buddy use to wrench on detroits all the time . He told me that with a few little modifications to the gasket surfaces and a lot of meticulous care on assembly  they could be made leakless.

your buddy is right, my brother had a 6-71 in his truck and the only time it left any oil any where is if you left it idle too long, it would drip out the blowby tubes other than that it was clean.

Best part is they are almost bullet proof.
