Don't get a lot of big stuff and certainly nothing in the class of some of the logs that get posted by forum members. However, I have one made me think a bit. I know there is no big value, but I want to get the most out of my efforts that I can. It is an 8 foot yellow pine that I had planned to just cut into 2x4. 8' length doesnt lend well to anything other dimensional lumber. Then I started thinking I can get 2x4's out of about anything and I can get some 14" to 16" boards that I can't get from anything else. Am I thinking right.....get the widest boards I can get?

Thanks for the advice to a novice!!!

It depends upon what your lumber need is.  It also depends upon the log's quality.  If there are knots/limbs, then I would shy away from framing lumber, but those knots in may lend character to "flat" lumber.  To me it would come down to lumber need and log quality.

:P  Your OP did not indicate whether the lumber was for yourself or for eventual sale.  ???

I would really like for it to be for eventual sale......

Thank you for your quick replies!!!!

Seems to me that anyone can go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy 8' 2x4, probably cheaper than you will be able to sell yours. On the other hand, I don't recall seeing any 14" or 16" pine boards at either one of those places...

Just saying...

hopm,

Remember - you can always make them smaller but you can't make them bigger.

I would saw the wide ones when possible.  Like PC said - you don't find those in the box stores.  And like you said - you can get 2x4s out of anything.
