any of you fellas done this before?

I got me a kit, and i'm planning on using it.  only problem is what do I caponize!

i got a hunch, i have 7 chickens, 2 have long tail feathers, 5 have real short tail feathers, i'm guessing the long feathers are the pullets?

Don't guess, just wait and see! ;)

Years ago.
Here is a How to Do It sheet. Suspect it is similar to your kit directions.

I guess if you get in there, and don't find anything, it's the wrong kind.  :)

haha, yeah, i thought of trying that route...

i don't figure it can be too difficult, i'd hate to accidentally kill one of the little buggers, though.... making a new cage to keep them away from food and water for 12 hours will be the biggest nuisance.

any difference on taste that you remember?

and lastly, is it worth the trouble?  haha

Those look old enough so you should be able to tell by heighth of there combs.  I do not caponize but my broilers only grow for about 8 weeks and dress about 8 lbs.

What trouble?   ;)

You have the kit, so now just need to get da experience.  :)

Just need the steady hand. Like it says, go slow and steady.  :) You wouldn't ask for anything less.  :)

ack, i have no idea what i'm looking at!

these are black australorps, and I've got a white something and the other, i'm guessing he's a cockerel too since he was a "freebee"

i can't really tell if there's a difference on the combs, i'll have to look closer tomorrow.  the combs all look the same to me.

yeah, i'll figure it out... my largest concern is cutting open a bird and finding I shouldn't have cut it open....  i sort of wish I had a dead bird to work with (without making one dead....)

Not knowing what 'caponising' is, I went and looked it up.

In the wikipedia, there was THIS LINK

The link has colour pictures of how to caponise. It might help.

That's pretty much like my earlier link, only with color pics. A little more drawing detail in the one I included .

As a male, I think this series of posts needs to be sent to the outhouse, er, woodshed.

I just had somethin similar done a few months back, and DanG, I feel sorry for the chickens. :'(

T R; haven't looked at the links, but from what I remember from Vo-Ag in the late '50s...............your wing/arm was raised, skin was slid over a rib, incision was made and un-needed parts were removed.  Is this pretty much what happened?  Pictures would be nice.
