I have been wanting to build a buggy.  Something along the lines of a trail buggy / surrey.  I have two questions.  Has anyone bought buggy parts lately, and what suppliers did you use.  Second, Does anyone have any thougts on where to find steel spoked wagon rims?  Or something similar.  Here's a pic of the rims.

Try pokin' around in here:   www.ruralheritage.com

There is an excellent forum in the "Logging Camp" there.  Those folks could probably put you onto something.  Careful, though!  I went over there about 2 hours ago and just now managed to get back over here. ;D :D :D   There's oodles of stuff about horse logging on there.

Thanks DanG, I've been lurking there and MotherEarth.  I was wondering if any of our wood workers had done one of these projects, but mainly I was wondering if any of the ahh... "resuorceful minds" here had any thoughts on these rims.  It seems like I've seen something similar.  I just can't recall what it was on.  They don't have be exact.  Just heavier spokes than a motorcycle.  I'd like to stay away from a car rim.  Thanks

You might check with the local Amish group. I'll bet they know where to get  buggy wheels.

We don't have any amish this far south.  I wish we did, I find their life style interesting.  Actually, I can buy these rims through a buggy dealer.  I was trying to find something I could salvage something similar off of. ;D

I can't connect on the link picture on your post, but we can get Amish steel tires....just need to know what size you're interested in.
We've got a close friend that is Amish that has what I think you are referring to on his hay wagon.  I'll try to get over there and take a picture later this evening.
Or are you thinking of actual Amish Buggy wheels?

Roxie, what I'm looking for reminds me of a model t tire maybe.  Like a motorcycle rim with a rubber tire, only 1/2"dia. spokes.  I've found a couple sources, but they seem really expensive.  I'm looking for about a 30" wheel.

Let me see what I can find out.....what with the Amish connection and all!   :)

Cowboy Bob spoke with Aaron (the Amish buggy repair guy) and he said buggy wheels are 36"....he's looking into the price with rubber on the outside.   :)  Aaron got kinda excited about your project and wanted to know if you need "shafts" and stuff too.   :D
Isn't it interesting that just like 'English' folks have mechanics for their cars, they have buggy doctors.

Roxie, the wheels I'm looking for are all steel with a rubber tire.  Just like a Model T wheel.  The buggie wheels that are wood with a rubber strip or "tire" around the outside don't hold up as well off road and in the mud.
For what I'm wanting to build, some people use regular car type rims, but I don't like that look. ::)
Thanks
We're going to try to make it to the National Chuck Wagon race in a few weeks.  Maybe, I will be able to find something there.
Thanks again :)

probably out of line here for what you're looking for...but i've seen em made using motorcycle tires and wheels.

cktate, your right in line. :D  I've seen'em that way myself.  I thought about it,and if it was going to be a two passenger, that's the route I'd probably go.  Problem is it's going to be a four passenger, and I like to make everything weigh more than it should. :D
Here's a pic of what I would like to use.

Here's a pic of what I may have to use. :(
