hi, have any of you made homemade log dogs? got any measurements?

THANKS

I made some, the style that you can turn out to turn the log, or turn the points in to keep the log from rolling. I can get measurements for you, but I'd say the size you make them depends on the size logs you are working with.

Are you talking about dogs to hold the log for hewing? I made a set out of re-bar. I put flat points on them, one parrallel to the length of the dog and one perpendicular. They are about 14" long and 4" tall.

There are many oppinion on if the points should be square or flat in section.

Those I use are either homemade or made by some blacksmith. The points are square in section on all three of them. I found two at the dump and bought one at a flea market. I have never seen any with flat points but some say they are better.

I have no digital camera and cannot post a picture of them.

Dave Shepard

I don't have any pictures, I don't know how to post them yet. The points are perpendicular on mine so that they will go into the grain on both the top log and the support log which is ninety degrees to the top one. If you made the points square then it wouldn't matter. I'll see if I can figure out how to post, but I wouldn't hold your breath. ::)

Do a search for picture posting instructions, they are here somewhere....

The picture shows one of my logdogs.

It is bent from a single piece of round bar, with the end tapered. The ends have quadratic section.

Mine are very similiar. They have chisel points that look just like the tips of a large flat screwdriver blade. Hope to have pics by the weekend, have been getting some prompting to get with the program. :) ;)
