Percy..nice to hear that favors are paying off!
So....do they teach the class every semester?  In 5 years you could have a sub-division!
How about a block and tackle to lift things up to the second level?
Making somthing idiot-proof only leads to the creation of bigger idiots!

Good turn Percy!  8)

Re: The spiral staircase, if you really need it due to space constraints, it's not like you move furniture in and out all the time. Build a nice balcony outside with french doors. i'm sure you have a means to lift furniture up to the balcony and if not, borrowing or renting something once in ten - twenty years should not be a big deal.

Going up and down 2 - 3 times a day should not be a problem either but 2 - 3 times an hour (like f you use it for an office) that might be a pain.
The oil is all in Texas, but the dipsticks are in D.C.

Hey... that fancy notchin' looks like part of a modified English tying joint. And the whole dang structure is a classic Saltbox Frame. And guess who got a book on timber-framing for Christmas  ;D?

Alla you guys crack me up.

So, there has been a slight change of plans, mainly, no pre assembly in the shop. They have put the "bents" together and are fitting everything but I wont actually see it untill I put it up myself. I took some pics last night of a pre assembled bent. Looks way cool...

Im gonna stain the spruce beams  and store the whole thing on a lumber trailer , all stickerd up with a tarp till early spring when I can assemble it on the property. Im gonna have to get-er done soon, as spruce likes to wiggle alot when it drys. Tips??

By the way, the uptairs is only half the size of the main floor so there will be a loft. We can wrassle up whatever stuff is gonna be goin up there. Thanks for all the suggestions on stairs, stuff. Im considering them all ;D ;D

What kinda shop floor ya got over there?

Steven A.

I have a second home with a spiral staircase. It also has a conventional one, both going to the same second floor.
The spiral staircase is used a few times every few years by little kids who think its cool.
I have never, no never, seen an adult use it. I have tried getting used to it and failed. Even if you are not carrying anything it seems unnatural and uncomfortable to use.
It is purely a space waster and when I redo that house in a few years its going to go.
If I was building a new place like yours I'd look at other stair alternatives. Easy to find with a little google searching.
Books I know you will like and find very useful for ideas are here at Susan Susankas website.

Susan Susankas books are FANTASTIC for anyone building a home. They are aimed at the smaller home but have great ideas adaptable to any size house and she has some great stair ideas.
I CANNOT recommend them highly enough.

Boy, Percy, after my comment, I thought you were for sure going to post a picture or 2 showing how little scenery is in your area.  :D
I eat a high-fiber diet.  Lots of sawdust!
