I am removing a lot of Boxelder trees to improve a pasture.  I'd like a couple new trees for shade.   Any thoughts on good tree species for a pasture?

Fast grower, yellow poplar comes to mind in your area.

Hard to beat Maple for shade.  Slower than Poplar, pretty fast and spreads  more.

Black Locust for some shade and fence posts.  It spreads, but not fast.

For long term value, Black Walnut, Oak, etc.

I personally like some Elm, Hedge, and Mulberry around for drought insurance.  No grass?  Fire up the chainsaw and let them eat some leaves.  Beat 2012 that way until the rains came.   ;D  May be less of an issue in PA though.  ???

Maybe best to just leave a few boxelder, though I am not familiar with them at all.

Keep in mind, the taller the tree, the more lightning will be attracted to it!

That's why, in another similar post, I suggested Thorn Apple!

First, they don't grow very tall, and they have a wide canopy!
