I'm an American Idol Fan. We try to watch it every week. Many times I may not be wild about the genre of the music, but I think the show truly finds some great talents. The reason I am posting is because of something that was on last weeks show that was awesome. Somehow, they brought Elvis back to life to sing a duet of "If I can Dream" with Celene Dion. It was one of the most amazing pieces of video editing I have ever saw. They made me believe that Elvis was on that stage. They also got me to down load itunes and buy the video so I can watch it again and again. Its not only an amazing piece of television, its a pretty durn good song ta boot.  I usually don't get inspired often, but that clip sure makes me miss Elvis and know that he would have been a star no matter what era he lived in.

Jeff, Laureen and I are not American Idol fans, but we are hooked on Dancing with the Stars, so I can relate!

Being an ex-musician who was on the wrong side of many auditions, you would think I would not be into it.  But, those early shows with the cattle call auditions are great.  I can't get enough of that. :D
I do what the little voices in my wife's head tell me to do.

Hooked on Dancing with the stars, and I like the Nashville Star, but don't seem to find time to watch it. Some real good talent on that show.

I'm not a fan of any of those shows.

I saw something like that on PBS where they actually had a band playing with Elvis.  It was an hour long program.  I never liked Elvis, so I didn't watch it.

my hubby and I always watch american idol.  We thought the show was awesome with Elvis.  I think it is great that they invite musicians on the show to give their two cents to the singers.   smiley_trap_drummer

Other than Yankee's games ( after the sun goes down) I rarely watch tv. Me wife got me watching Dancing w/ the stars. ( I still don't go in to watch 'till the sun goes down though).
I like watching programs that I don't know the ending of.

Chris, I just agreed to a houseband gig at the new country club. The owner is a pretty talented vocalist/guitarist. He's been in the studio a bunch lately and although he owns a country club, he's probably tired of paying several hundred dollars an hour for studio musicians. I told him the only reason he's put a band together was to avoid the big studio fees. :)
Little does he know I will hand him my Union Rate Card after I get my kit setup and and walk into the drum booth. ;D

I LOVE Dancing with the Stars, and it's cousin "It Takes Two" which is one where they pair stars with Singers and they compete a-la-Dancing with the Stars style. They're both fantastic shows.

Last year's ITT was magic, the couple I picked from day one won it. They were superb, He was an opera singer and she was a model, but in the end show he had her singing opera. It was spine tingling.

Australian Idol is good too, I usually watch about half the actual shows, and I sometimes catch one or two of the audition shows, I loved last years winner, and bought his CD  (Damian Leith) he's magic. I picked him as the eventual winner from his audition. The kids laughed at me coz I was so sure, but he was so fantastic it wasn't believable. I was so pleased when he won.

They're great shows. I like shows that are good entertainment, family friendly and not sensationalistic.

I can't stand shows like "Funniest home videos", they're disgusting. People hurting themselves and everyone laughing at it??? What's that teaching society!?

ITT starts again here next week, and I'm REALLY looking forward to it.

I agree with ASY on the americas funniest home videos. Its beyound me how people find humor in guys getting hit in (THAT) spot and the audiance laughing at it. I think when that show started it was clips that were caught by chance. Now i think 95% is staged junk. Like Jeff, me and momma bear enjoy idol. I think jordan will win the title. Her and Milisa are great talents. Sometimes  the trash thats on Tv makes me wonder who desides what to allow to be broadcast,,,ok ill get off my soapbox,,,bedway

Ugggh, you guys are pitiful.  You actually watch that stuff?   smiley_thumbsdown

My ears would bleed if I was forced to listen to Celine Dion, or most any of those amateur singing shows.  It's worse than the old Star Search.

For that, I'm glad I have cable.  I can watch entertaining shows like Dirty Jobs, or Modern Marvels, or something on DIY or the Food Network.

TexasTimbers

I'm with you engineer. And I have a wife that already is watching How It's Made, Mail Call, Modern Marvels, and our favorite Dogfights, when I come home.

I can't stand watching those "reality" shows and all that scrapola. When Who Wants To Be a Millionaire came on I watched 3 of them before I was burned out on the theatrics and filler.

That's not to say anyone who gets into that stuff is wasting their time. If it crumbles their cookies more power to them.

I watched it, so I know what I'm talking about. Not watching it and calling it dribble makes the comments dribble. Sorry, some of us are well rounded and informed. Some are not. So since I have been called pitiful, in return I get to smile and say I feel superior to the comments made. ;D

There are worse things to be called.  :D As long as it don't hurt old people and little kids,I don't care what anyone does as long as I don't have to put up with it.I can't be a judge,I have never watched most of the programs above. If I did see them it was only for a few minutes.Kinda hard to be a judge.People will try to talk to me at work about a commerical or a program.I don't have a clue about it.Now if they want to talk about the woods......

Here is a clip found on Youtube of the duet. If you have broadband, you can decide for yourself if it's cool or not. :)   The quality is not the same, but it still is technically amazing to me.

i agree with what you say jeff about folks not watching should not bash it.
but i also agree that i have not enough time in my life to watch that type of programming.
IF i find some time to look at the tv , it is usually the unit, or svu. only cause they are on real late and i am finnishing work then.
i do know regular folks that just seem like life would stop if they missed an episode of the idol show.

Jeff

Our cable has a function where we can watch broadcast shows when we want, once they have aired. We dont watch much T.V., but make a point to watch certain shows together. We both love music so Idol is one we like, we also watch the dancing with the stars when we can. I dont think much of the early episodes of idol where they include the really bad auditions for entertainment values of a different sort, but at this part of Idol, the remaining people are very very talented and deserve to be where they are.

I wasn't trying to get people to watch the show, just wanted to say the technology of the elvis bit, to see him standing on the stage singing that song again, 40 years after the fact, was really remarkable.

There's also clips on how they made the duet.  Very imaginative technology, and just goes to show that Elvis still sells.

As for Idol, I watch it when I can.  I've been playing in bands for over 40 years, and I am extremely impressed with some of the talent that is out there.  Idol has given people their 15 minutes of fame that never would have had the chance any other way.  Some got fame way beyond their 15 minutes, and some didn't even deserve the time spent.

As for the funniest videos, just remember the saying that its only funny until someone gets hurt.  Then its hilarious.   :D

We watch Idol pretty regularly. I've been in music for years, and enjoy some of the real talent that turns up, as opposed to some of the junk on the radio. You really do have to be able to sing on a show like that. I don't often watch the 'results' show, since it is an hour of hype. I'd rather watch singing... I've always enjoyed watching young people with talent, and the missus and I also go to high school marching competitions, concerts, and theatre.

I watched the clip and have to agree the tech behind it is cool! 8)

The duet however has me running for cover. :o
Celine is waaaaay out of her league in this one. :-\

I dont watch Idol, but that was way cool to see Elvis on stage singing. Before I watched the clip I kinda expected a holograph of some sort but was impresssed at the ability of the tech folks to get him on stage as real as it was. Celine done a good job I thought, considereing Elvis wasnt really there, she played to him well.
