Can't answer the question, kinda wondering, if the stumps are any harder to dry than the wood, would you have anything left when you were done?

Cant imagine why anyone would want to go thru the trouble, but then I do some crazy things as well.  Historically, a "GLUT" was used to hit a FROE to make riven shake shingles. The GLUT of choice was a root knot from a small hickory tree just below ground level. It was supposed to hold up the best hitting the iron backside of the froe better than anything else here in the east. I made on once, heck of a deal digging by hand (younger days ::)) This is all Roy Underhill type stuff. You would draw knife off the bottom of the sapling just before hte root ball to make a handle easy to grip. I will try to get a picture of mine some time.

Some interest here in what you are calling a GLUT....I think it is a wood wedge used to widen a split that is started in the wood using something like a FROE.   A STRIKING MAUL is used to hit the froe....also according to the Eric Sloane's Museum of Early American Tools.. :) :) ;)

WELL, he would be the master, perhaps I have been misnaming this thing all along. I could stroll over to my collection of ES books but I will take your word for it.

GLUT   A wedge shaped like a splitting wedge but made of a hard wood such as hickory or persimon. Used to further open a split started by other means. Most commonly used around here when splitting fence rails.
