I keep reading here to "Use the Best oil".

I assume your talking about the mix oil. I confess to using Tractor Supply's, store brand.

What oil would you recommend?

I have a Husky and a Dolmar.

ely

i use husky ,sthil, echo. as far as brand names. i never use marine oil in my chainsaws, not sure why i just dont do it.

sawguy21

Marine oil is rated TCW-3. It is designed for a different application, outboards run at half the speed of a saw and are water cooled. Stay with the name brand oils mix at 50:1 and you should never have a problem.

If it passes all the proper tests, it's probably fine.  I've become partial to synthetics because they don't stink or smoke.  Nice for chainsaw milling.  That said, I've used dino oil for many years without an issue.

Bar oil, I travel to Iowa every month, and they have Menard's lumber yards.  Quaker State for about $5/gal.  Perfect consistency IMHO, and great price.  I bought a few gallons of Husky oil too from my local dealers going out of business sale.  I regret not buying more, but I was up to about 10 gallons at the time.  Gotta know when to say "when".

I've always used either Stihl or Husky oil, depending on what dealer I'm near when I need it.
I have now switched over to the Husky synthetic oil, it's better oil and only about 20 cents more a bottle.
I also get my bar oil from the dealer.

I use Husky or Stihl bar oil, of course, I get it at dealer cost. ;D Even so, at retail, it is still cheaper than bars and chain.

TSC bar & chain oil is going to be $4.66 / gal. this week with the 10% off coupon.

Does anybody get bar & chain oil in 5 gal. pails and at cheaper price?

sawguy21

Yeah, you can buy it by the drum at the local auto salvage yard for less. ;) Seriously, $4.66/gal is cheap, especially at today's oil prices. Is the stuff any good or are you just wasting it?

We tried the stuff in the green bottle, junk itasca i believe how it's spelled burns the tip of the bar we went back to super lube bar and chain oil it's twice the money but great stuff and we use only amsoil in the engine there is nothing we found better that stuff was designed to be run at 300 to 1 but nobody believed it so they changed the label to 100 to 1 my neighbor is a dealer i read this a while ago.

with amsoil the muffler screens have never gotten plugged up like conventioal oils do we ran weed wackers for 5 years 6 hours a day and never had to take the mufflers off to scrape out the black junk that boggs them down. at the time we were cutting over 200 acres of grass a week  man that was alot of work.

In the summer I use canola oil. $20 for 5gal. It runs through faster than regular bar oil but I have found it works just as good. I cut alot of saddle notches for cabins and have never had a problem.  The canola turns to a thick grease in the winter so I switch to Napa brand chain oil.
I've tried both Husky and stihl winter oil but neither is very good at -30. The cheaper oil from Napa still flows good even at these temperatures.
As far as mix I use Napa synthetic mix, mainly because of our remote location. The nearest Walmart is 350 miles away. When I do get to the big city I try to buy Castrol synthetic oil.
I've taken apart saws run on nothing but synthetic and was suprised by how little wear there was on the cylinders.
I never met a tree I didn't like!!

i try to be very efficeint so as i can get more done  i used to wear out guys i had my 1st shift then i had 2 guys that when they got out of work they met me on the job and finshed cutting until dark then we usally went to the gas stations and cut  they are all lit up at night then we would in july trim the bushes until midnight or so under the light it was cooler also.

I haven't had any problem with the TSC or Tech 30 bar oil cutting hardwoods up to 24" dia..

I run it in a Stihl 041 and a new 290  and find that the bar oil tank still has some oil in it when the gas runs
out, but the chain has oil on it.

The TSC oil doesn't have the manufacturer name, but does list tack additive and has no color.

My neighbor runs Mobil 1 in his cars & truck and then uses it again for bar oil in a Mac. 1010 & 700 with
   24" bars and a Homelight with a 12" bar.

I have found when using the cheaper ( Wall Mart super tech or Polun Pro ) bar oils I have to turn the oiler up to almost max or have more bar wear when blocking firewood. In the older saws where the oiler ran full time it was not so much of a problem as the bar still got oiled at idle between cuts. Matter of fact my old Dolmar 112 has an oiler thar self-adjusts to max so I use one tank of fuel to two tanks of oil :D

man that sucks having to put oil in when you only cut half a tank of fuel seems like it would get old as much running of saws I do I burn 2 1/2 gal a day of mix gas in a husky 365  16 inch carbide coated chisel chain and a husky 372 with a 20 inch coated chipper chain they last a lot longer then the regular chain we are usally cutting in the dirt that is stuck in the bark of the ash trees from skidding them out of the woods
