I have been looking for quite some time for a bigger skidder and I finally found one.  This just arrived this last week.  It can really pull!

Nice machine, they are very popular in my neighborhood. I looked at your album and it looked like you were running a 440 before. How much more power does the 540 have? Does it fit in the same places? What about fuel. Bottom line How much more wood do you get on the landing at the end of the day.

That looks like a great piece of equipment! Skidders always seem to me to be an interesting challenge. I've never run anything like that but I want to.....

the jd 540 is a great skidder.i have countless hours on them and they always did what i needed..they can be trippy but, just remember they tip a very long ways before they really tip over.
the one fault they have is the winch in cold weather they act up sometimes.the brake runs by hyd oil and in cold weather it won,t clamp fast enough.the hitch will drop down before the brake band holds.

Yes, I was running a 440B before and still have it.  I haven't had enough use on the 540B yet to guage fuel consumption.  But I certainly pull a lot more.  I was able to pull between 1500-2000 Bf per hitch.  And when I'm having to drag over 1/3 of a mile it makes all the difference in the world.
