Congrats on the new mill. I too have a LT 15 and have sawed a lot of lumber with it. Check out my gallery for pics of my sawshed. I sawed out in the open for about a year. ::) :(  I can't believe the mill doesn't have the scales on it. :o  Musta been built on Fri. evening about quitting time.  Yes, you will hit the backstops and also watch trash building up under the dogs when you let them all the way down. Sparks will come all the way through the cant so you can have a visual effect to go with the audio if it is late enough in the day. My stepson was in charge of that dog on the last cant of the day at the end of a big job and light was fading fast. :D :D

Thanks everyone,

Don K  I like your saw shed, the open in the front design, no posts to contend with.  I am also interested in your log turner what do you pull the cable with?

Don, I've got a two way hand winch mounted on a short post about mid way of the mill. I thought I had a pic of it. I am going to modify it this week a little as I have some SYP logs to saw that is 22" to 28" dia. The winch holds both directions, I think it is a 1500/2000 #, but I have the cable on two pulleys so it handles the big ones easily. It is buried in concrete far enough back so that it doesn't inhibit the head travel.

Beav39,

My first project will be a saw shed followed by a workshop.  In between Ill be sawing osage orange for making long bows.  Bows are one reason for the workshop, furniture for the wife another and maybe a wooden boat someday when (if) I retire.

Beautiful!  Are the bows made with only osage orange or are they different woods for different functional parts of the bow?

Thanks guys,

WDH,  Its hard to tell from the pics but the woods include osage orange, Ipe, hickory and some bocote in the riser/handle area.  The bows are stained with the exception of the ipe, thats why you cant see the yellow osage.  The bow in the close up is ipe with only a clear coat of finish.  All of the bows are backed with bamboo.  The bamboo provides good tensile strength on the tension side of the bow (the back). Osage and Ipe are excellent in compression strength on the belly side of the bow.  Anyway I didn't mean to get started on bow building.

How did you learn to make bows?

A thread that turns to making bows instead of food.   ;D   ;D Sounds interesting.

Speaking of food, I have not tried it but thought about it one summer, watermelon slices via the mill.  Tim B.

Good looking bows, Don.

Congratulations on your mill.  I know you consider it primarily a tool for furthering your bow interests, but, I believe it won't be long before you find all sorts of needs, excuses and reasons.   :D

My mill shed came from the trees I had to cut to make room for the mill shed.  Plenty of pics of the process in my gallery if you want to take a look.

Hey, WDH, one of the other things the trapper you met here the other day does, is makes bows.

Don, if you might garner an inkling to perhaps offer one of those bows up for forum auction, I would surely make a notable bid.   ;D
