Sears "Compucarve".

Anyone own one of these?  My soon to be 90yr old dad wants one so bad his teeth hurt.  I have read mixed "reviews" about it.  I would like to hear from those with real world experience with this.  Might have to track down one for his upcoming birthday.  Ideas????

More power to your Dad, that he wants to get into computer woodworking at his age, but beware of that machine. They have a history of not running right out of the box. They aren't much more than a plotter with a Foredom tool attached to it for the motor. They have to run for hours to get a small carving done and the noise is horrible. The plus side of the Compucarve is the software. It takes some pretty expensive software to draw and write the code for a cnc machine to carve those patterns. I have looked at these guys a couple of times and the machine looks good. http://www.romaxxcnc.com/products.htm Software is not included. Now you know why the Compucarve still looks attractive to most. The idea that you can get a cnc router and software for that price looks good, but it looks to me to be one of those too good to be true.
