It's an old wives tale and the medical community says it doesn't work, but I always end up using clear fingernail polish on chigger bites. I'll have them persist for weeks or even months if I don't, but once I dab some clear fingernail polish on them they end up going away witin 4-5 days.

Several liberal applications of rubbing alcohol each day helps me.

I keep a little plastic container of Chigger Plus around for the itching of insect bites.   Sometimes I think it helps more than other times, but at least it makes me feel like I'm doing something.

It contains aloe vera, chamomile, PEG-2 and a whole bunch of stuff, that I can't pronounce, written in teeny tiny letters, that I can't read.  :D

I got chiggers visiting Noble a few years ago. I was told there was no cure and that you just had to wait it out. I'll be very disappointed with a couple guys to learn that there is a cure. :D
i never been so miserable itchy in my entire life. It didnt even hit until we got home.  If there is ever a reason never to go back to Noble's that's would be it.

That's pretty much the program, Jeff.  You just have to wait it out.  Alcohol helps a little, cold water baths helps a little, but it's all very temporary.  A sure cure for the Chigger miseries would make a man a million in a hurry. :D

Jeff, Missouri doesn't have chiggers, been through many a winter and never had a chigger. 8) Best thing I found was to use alcohol or witch hazel, and some type of cortizone. Little suckers will eat your ankles alive if you don't plan for them.

I take a bath in bleach water, about the strength of the foot bath at a swimming pool.  Might only work on a fresh infestation.

I scratch them raw, then apply liberal coating of Rubbing Alcohol.  How else do you think I have fast leg movement ???  :o ::) ::) ::) ;D

I don't get chiggers. 8) When my wife gets them, everytime she goes outside in the summer, she complains endless to me about them. I don't think the complaining helps the bites, but it seems to make her feel better. ::)

Where I train my bird dog on state land in south jersey, there is one field where there are buckets of chiggers. I have bites still itching now that showed up over a month ago.

I did a little research, and found this excellent website: http://mdc.mo.gov/nathis/arthopo/chiggers/

I also have used the clear nail polish treatment, and it seems to help a little.

My dad had an archaeologist friend who spent a lot of time looking for Native American artifacts, and he was a big fan of sulphur powder. My dad said you could smell his backpack - from upwind - 100 yards away.

The clorox treatment seems to workfor me.

i use bleach in my bath to kill them when i do mess up and get them, to keep them off of me i use liberal amounts of anything that has DEET in it. it works for me. as for the itching and scratching and burning and bleeding...............toughen up nancy. ;D

here is a related story that i will relay but have no part in.
we were clearing right of way about 10 years ago and came upon a rancher and his grandson that were mowing hay or fixing fence or i dont know what. anyway they ask us if the chiggers were bad on us and we said yeah if we forgot to spray down they were terrible.  they both laughed and proceded to tell us about how if you put a slice of irish potato in your back pocket you would not have any chiggers or ticks. we listened to them for awhile and had decided they were pulling our leg, i mean how silly would that be. raw potatoes in your pockets?  before we moved on they produced theirs from their pockets and sure enough they had some shriveled up black and dirty slices of potatoes. we did not laugh at them............it was tough but we did not laugh..........until we got out of hearing. anyway it may work but it was the first time and the last time i ever heard that one.

Tom

Something tells me that potato in your pocket won't keep chiggers at bay. :D

I've used the finger nail polish and it seemed to work. They were around Ft. Riley Kansas alot when I was there.

Amen to that!  Y'all can keep the ticks and the chiggers!

semologger

Ive got loads of C ticks the last couple of days. The one you cant hardly see they are so small. About the size the end of a pencil. Sharpend real good.

ADAMINMO

Try rubbin them down with Everclear. It works good for poison ivy , so I would think it would work well for chicks and tiggers also. You can get it at any liquor store.

Raider Bill

I've been getting some homemade "everclear" In tenn. Haven't tried it on chiggers yet but works wonders for my normal well being after a long day working on the house. 8)
