Husqvarna 42/42 special

Could someone tell me the difference between these 2 models?  I own a 1988 42 special since new, which still runs like a watch.  I've always wondered what the "special" meant.

If memory serves the special is a closed port design like the 242, while the plain 42 is open port. There is a small power and rpm differense.
