How much less wood does a e-classic burn than a CB 6048?

cb6048

I would be interested in some real world results myself.

In all honesty on an 18deg day,  2,500 sqft house, half of it with 14' cathedral's, allot of window area,  inside temp set at 72deg. I just stuffed my cb6048 1/2 to 5/8 full with semi dry hardwood. That burned for 31 hours. When I got home it still had a few charred logs on the bottom and a ton of coals. I think that's fantastic. The house does have radiant heat and the owb also heats the hot water.
I did install the optional blower but have a timer on it that only allows it to be on for 10 min.s then it returns to natural draft. I also lowered the on/off temps from factory settings to 180/170

cb6048 what made you put the optional blower on? just to heat up faster, also what kind of timer did you use, and did it affect the smoke at all when it turns on making more less or the same thanks

I put the blower on because this is my first year with the owb and I got caught behind on my wood gathering for the year so I ended up with semi-dry wood. My thought was the blower would get that wood going faster and not smoke as much(not that the smoke mattered out in the woods here) plus I could run lower start up and shut down temps there for using less wood........as far as the timer my dealer had invented this and used parts bought at Grainger. It is wired in between the therm and the damper, again to save on useless burning it can be set any where from .3min to 30min.  I run 10min.    Does it smoke less? Yes once the blower gets it up to temp.

Do I think I'm going to run out of wood? Yes! I had 7.5 cord and not going to make it....Oh well first year lessons learned. Another lesson learned is I will be constructing a large post and beam structure with a metal roof over the owb and all my wood! Other than that I'm on automatic oil delivery and last fill up was 8gals!

I bet your oil dealer loved that.

Actually hes a friend. And tied in my owb at cost. They have three other customers on my street any how.
But I thought 8 gals was some what comical!

I took my blower off of my 6048 this year.  The results are great.  The wood is lasting longer and it also maintains heat better.

I had a similar idea like you about the timer.  I wanted to just hook up the blower during cold days or if I got some wet wood.  My dealer told me my blower motor might burn up from the heat of the fire and not being cooled by the fresh air.

It was -15 F last night and I forgot to turn the heater off in the barn before I went to bed.  My boiler was at 80F this morning and the house had dropped from 70 to 60 last night.  I won't make that mistake again.

terra8186 do you notice any difference with smoke when the damper opens with or with out the blower? i was thinking about getting one  for my 5036 because i just got it this year and the wood isnt that seasoned so it smokes when i first load it, but will be ready for next year with seasoned wood, i need to becareful with the smoke because my neighbors were against me getting this to begin with thanks

I think I am burning 1/3 less wood this year.  30 cords last year and probably 20 this year.  As far as the smoking goes,  Your burner is going to smoke if you are burning wet wood.  Once you burn the water off your burner stops smoking.  The white smoke is much more noticable with a blower because the water is boiled out of the wood in a shorter amount of time.

In short, I would not recommend putting on a blower, and I would recommend taking it off if you have one on.

I would have to say I agree that the blower on ALL the time will burn more wood, but that being said I did not notice any increase in wood consumption with my blower set at 10 mins run time. In fact it gets my semi dry wood up to temp faster on very cold days when all my zones are calling for heat.

I also drilled two 11/2" holes on each side of the blower plate to enhance the natural draft after the blower shuts down.....it works mint.

As far as the heat burning out the motor I haven't heard that one yet. The fresh air is pulled directly through the blower for the natural draft. Besides that exact blower is the only way you can get a 7260 and believe me that owb throws some heat(my brother in law heats his house with one).
