Good Evening Folks,

I am new here and I absolutely love this site once I finally found it...... I'm 38 and although I don't work in the timber industry for pay my Dad and Granpa and Great Granpa have and I just love it as a hobby.  They have built water wheels for grist mills, log houses, etc. in NE Ohio (all I can do is help lug the timber around and do simple stuff once in a while when not working).  I have a ton of respect for what you guys do and love to learn - I'm building a tiny little log cabin for my kids now just to learn about joinery with my Dad.  Lots of fun.

Anyway...... I also has a tool question too.  I was using my Dad's slick this afternoon on the logs for the little cabin and noticed it may have some stampings on it (its really old and been in the family forever) cleaned it off (he said there was never any name on it as we sat there looking at it). Once we cleaned some of the crusty goods it says 1852 and something like JP Chisholm and then below that Cast Steel and then again JP or FP Chisholm.  I searched google for the name and slicks and about everything I can think of to see what the scoop but nothing anywhere.

Curiosity is killing me about where/who made it and I also need to make a new handle for it and wondered what to use - was planning on using white ash because I have a lot of it but if it originally would have had something like hickory I have a little of that to turn too.  I suppose the wood doesn't really matter than much I guess.... I have been using it with a cut off half handle for years anyway but would like to turn a new one for Dad tomorrow for Fathers Day.  The blade is about 3.75" wide and 18" long (steel part only).  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks for reading and I appreciate all the effort you guys have put into this site - its wonderful!!!!!!!!  Have a great evening.  Andy

Andy, welcome. I am originally from farm country south of Youngstown, Ohio.

On the chisel, I think I have seen that name on chisels before. Perhaps a fluke, but I belive they where good quality, I always look for Bucks, and some other brands (I am swimming in tools ;D). I flea market quite often and come across some interesting stuff.

Thanks for the input guys.  I kinda knew when I saw 1852 it was a needle in a haystack to try and track down but I did find out one of the first steel factories in the area was started by a guy by the name of Chisholm and was in Cleveland.  Not sure if its the same one but at least a start.  I'll keep digging because I am also into history of tools - ag or wood working.  Love Gravely tractors too.  Enough of the off topic stuff.  Thanks for the welcome.

Even at the ripe age of 157 for an antique it works beautifully so I'm going to keep using it.  Headed over to make the new handle now with Daddy O.  Have a great Fathers Day
