At one time VW diesels were very common, not so today.  The salvage yards here in the state of Maine, most of them are connected by computer, have none and don't want to put much effort into searching for one.  Canada allowed more in their country than the US.  I am looking for at least a 1.6 turbo, the 1.9n/a would be preferred, but I would gladly install the 1.9 turbo and even the 1.9TDI.  I would have to change the pump over to a non TDI pump if that is what showed up.

So, any Canadian VW enthusiast out there?

Try the classifieds on VWVortex's forum: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=860 .  I am not a diesel guy, but do like my VW GTIs  ;D .  Looks like there is a 1.6 in PA.
Trying to get out of DFW, the land of the $30,000 millionaires.  Look it up.

Thanks, that is a great start, maybe something will come of it.  Lots of choices really.

Usually lot of parts cars on kijiji Halifax the are usually cheaper than getting engine from a salvage yard but I do know that a local yard had a 200? (not old) a few months ago.

also check Kijiji for New Brunswick cities

Any ideas on what might come up when coming back across the border with an engine?  I can't see any problems, but it would be nice to know about it ahead of time.  The kijiji site had a couple of engines, I sent out one inquiry.

Nothing as far as I know about going back with an engin , all you need I beleive is a bill of sale , send Joan aka sprucebunny a note , she comes across often and goes home with treasures all the time  :D

That looks like what I am after.  How close are you to it.  I googled your location and see you are closer to me than Nova Scotia, by a little bit.

Moonhill,

How much you want to spend?  I have three friends with early 80's diesel vws.  They all sort of run and they get driven here and again, but if I said some one would give then $500 bucks ( maybe less) I bet they would go for it( at least one would).  What I don't know if an early vw is enough motor for you..

More important, what do you want the engine for????

I am finally getting around to converting my 4-door Suzuki Sidekick over to diesel.  It is heaver than a rabbit and I know how much pep they have so I am looking for at least a 1.6 turbo, I know the 1.9's will do just fine.

Is this a swap that has been done before???

Just to completely throw a wrench in it, What about an asian tractor motor? I read on the net about some guy with a toyota PU or something with a Jinma engine it with many thousands of miles.  I see guys in Farmshow who repower F-150's with Combine engines all the time.  Surplus center has cheap diesels also but your in Maine so maybe a Yanmar marine motor?

How are you going to mount the transverse engine?  VW transaxle or Suzuki Transmission????

I will inquire about engine size, but I think your gear ratio is as much an issue here as horsepower.

I believe all the "bugs"(pun intended) have been worked out of the process.

It now has over size tires on it. It need a suspension lift as well, to clear the base pan on the front diff.
