frick elevator fozen

weather finally broke a liitle so i decided to saw,,,when got tractor hooked up to check things out..elevator(drag chain)was froze in the pit >:(.aterabout hourand half of chiseling andscoopin and a shear pin iwas ready to go..i am trying to get afew pics on here..took me longer to get pics here than it did me sawing all day :Dany comments will appreciated ...thanks

STL, that's a nice looking outfit you got there. I love seeing closeups of circle mills running. When I was a kid, my dad sent me to a circle mill kinda like yours to get some oak fence boards. The mill was only a few miles from the house.

Well your mill brings back memories.

What kind of tractor you running there? Also, what kind of log. I have family in Lexington, would be cool to see the mill run.

the tractor is a farmall wd-9 i am about 45 miles from lexington down bg parkway...bardstown.. welcome to stop anytime. I was sawing pine tops from the last ice storm.i still gotta a lot 16 footers 24 to 30 dbh to do

Nice set up. Ingenious power transfer. Simple and effective, you reversed the direction of the PTO to run the right handed mill and basically made a slip clutch at the same time. And if you wanted to run the mill at a different rpm than 540 you could use a different sized tire. I like it. Thanks for the pictures.

Nice set up those belts for carrage travel alwaws fasinated me the way they were engineered mine has been replaced with a hyd motor

RD,very nice setup,does it take alot of pressure to hold the tire to the pulley and is slippage a problem.??That Heacock drive is a clever lashup ,he must have been a clever dude,I've got a friction feed.Something you never see mentioned but is very important is how the feed acts as a brake when you gigback.You have a heavy carriage and a one ton log giging back at a good clip, like a runaway freight ,you can't just let it slam into the stop everytime.The Heacock and the friction feed give you good variable control to slow and stop the carriage.I'am not sure how hydraulic feeds handle it but you don't want to stop suddenly.RD,also a good idea to have your bridge over the shaft especially if you cut alone.Frank C.

hello frank..i have the tire pressure 25 psi..when i tighten i pull tire in till it just touches then pull it in maybe half in. more. i prefer for to slip first...it rarely does unless i throw one of them36 dbh white oaks on....then it may squel a little...you mentioned a runaway carriage mine did that once,,,luckily did get it slowed but it still snapped off the stop..thats one thing about them flat belts sometimes they will get shorter if not used in awhile and they tighten up..now i make a point to run carrige back and forth at low idle speed to see how it reacts before i put on a log...another learning curve i guess...thanks for all comments and advise

R.D. Nice looking set-up. Need to saw some logs myself but too onery to get out and get'r done. I'm not too far from you. South of Hodgenville. Maybe weather holds a few more days I'll get some sawing done myself. Really enjoyed the pics. Ron

halfway to E-town off Hwy 210.
sawthemlogs, I like the looks of your mill, almost bought a new Bellsaw back several years
ago when they were still being sold new. Even bought a couple cant hooks, (which I am using now) but never bought the mill. Little more than I swing back then. Had my band mill now a little over a year.
Ron R, been wanting to check out your Bellsaw; maybe this spring?

On the old mill we used to saw on we had the same kind of setup with the tire. Slippage was often a prblem with our setup until we changed the camber of the tire. Once we had this figured out we thought we had it made in the shade until the first oversized spruce log made er slip. I was tailing at the time so I grabbed a can of belt dressing and gave the flat pully a good dose. That was the last time I ever heard it slip....
