Now I have about 350BF with mold on it, what does it do to strength and value???  It was a green log, cut stacked w/o stickers....

I sell large amounts of blue stained...Ponderosa pine....for more than Ponderosa w/o stain.

Thanks

Kevin

Spray it down with a garden sprayer containing 3:1 water/household bleach and it might take care of it, if it hasn't been too long.  A pressure washing will get rid of the mold too, if it hasn't gotten inside of the boards yet.

I've been there before. :)

The value is probably shot, for cosmetic reasons, but structurally the wood will be fine.

The stain fungus/mold goes after the free sugars in the wet wood first. It takes a while for things to really get going and actually break down the woods cellulose structure and actually weaken it.

i've seen a house where the guy did not sticker his pine so it would mold and it really looked good for inside walls. i thought it was stain and could not beleave it when he told me it was mold.

Blue stain is no real problem, but the white molds are rot molds.  The black molds like mildew are rot molds and smell bad too.  You certainly don't want them to get ahead of you.  Mildew in a house is hard to kill.

I think letting boards mold on purpose for use in a house is not a good idea.

It is very hard to kill molds after they get started.

I've had boards mold overnight in warm weather, it's disheartening.

Any of your spalted woods were allowed to form molds to bring out the color patterns. Just dry and seal the wood to stop the formation of new mildew.
If your spruce is solid it should be fine, however if it has gone soft, it will not have the strength that it once had.

I have some real nice spalted alder that I sat on for two years waiting for it to get to the stage that I wanted it at before milling it. I lost a couple logs in the process but the results were well worth it.
