I have a few questions about using Scarlet Oak for structural use?
The White Oaks I have are not big enough to harvest, but I have a bunch of Scarlet Oak that is declining in the tops. Not all of it is in decline but I thought about cleaning up and making room for the White Oaks to  flourish.

My other option is  Black Oak not as much and I do have  Short Leaf pine (syp).

Seems I would probably not get much money for the Scarlet and Black Oaks or pine, but I could get some decent size timbers out of the wood or flooring.

Maybe my question should be, What can I use the  Scarlet oak for? (timbers,flooring,2x4's?)

My  future TF would be around 14x20 or 16x24  with a loft at one end, not sure on the design yet. I would like to use the syp for siding  or flooring  Just thinking ahead. And wanting to use as much wood from my place as I can.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Pete

(I will either hire a mobile sawyer or take to a local sawmill .  All oak is about 10-14"  dbh pine is 10-12" dbh)

Welcome to the forum Pete, I'm not familiar with Scarlet Oak so I can't comment on the quality or uses.

If some one of the forum can give us a comparison of scarlet oak to the other standard oaks used in timber framing then maybe I can give you some advice.

I think scarlet oak is pretty similar to red oak.

I did a little reasearch and you're right on.
.
I guess the Scarlet Oak  falls into the Red and Black Oak group.  Northern Red,southern red,Pin,shingle, williow,Water,Blackjack, and a few more.  Scarlet  is said to named because of the autum colors bright reds and orange.
I also read that higher grades are used for flooring, and lower quality is used for pallets and industrial blocking and.

Black Oak is desrcribed as being a bridge timber,rr ties, flooring and rough construction.

I still would like to know if anyone has ever used this type of wood and what for , Thanks guys

I would use Scarlet oak just as I would Red oak. :) 10-12" oak would really just make beams (with the heart centered). You might get a few boards off the outsides before you get to the beam, depending on the size of beams you want.

The pine would make beams also, and siding/flooring. Really it's your preference depending on what your needs are.

Thanks Man,  I am in the very  early stages of planning.  Not sure on all the details yet.  I want to use as much wood from my place as I can, within reason.      Thanks

Welcome to the forum also, I forgot to say that. You'll find great info on just about anything here.

Have you considered getting your own mill? Just about all the sponsors on the left side of your screen make a small mill. I personally have an LT10 that would work great for what you are doing. They can be as little as 2,000 new.

That would make it a lot easier to cut what you are wanting, at your own pace.

Thanks for the welcome.  I have learned a ton here in a couple days. I would love to have my own mill sometime. I had no idea they could  be that affordable.  I will look into the sponsors here.  Milling my own wood for any project would be awesome.    I have alot to learn.  and I know I came to right place.   Thanks  .
