Quite a while ago Ron W suggested some sort of rule of thumb type interface where you could post your words of wisdom. I said yea, thats a good idea and then promptly forgot about it ::)

Then Kev comes along with the do you know thread which reminded me again. So, I am working on it right now!

What I need now is categories.
The way this will work is that you pick a category to submit your tip, trick, rule of thumb or words of wizdom in, and then do it. Then when someone is looking for something they will know where to look.  This is not going to be just another board, it will be a different program within this one. with a link to it in the new side bar panel to the right.

O.K. Start listing!
The Obvious will be
    [Chainsaws][Milling][Forestry]
and so on, but not limited to forestry. Also
[Outdoors][doghousedom][cooking][/list] almost anything... We can always add categories if somebody has sumpthun that does not fit.
I can change my profile okay. No errors. If you can,t remove all the extra info in other fields and try.

Ok I guess this could go into rural living or something of that nature.

you always want to live east of where you work if possible. In my case I can't. It would mean I would have a house boat. :D

The reason being----if you live west of where you work your driving into the sunrise in the morning and driving home into the sunset at night.

Of course this depends on what time you start and leave work.

Is this what your looking for?

I`ve been working with cedar all morning and all my orifices are plugged with sawdust, I`m trying to think but nuth`ns happening.
I`ll try to add something of merit later ...

Here, I'll give you a couple.

I find that if I reach around a tree and my fingers touch, it is aour 18" dbh.  Of course, this would vary for different people, but gives you a good rule of thumb when talking to landowners.

Trees with swollen knots generally have heart rot.  The rot will run about 4' on either side of a defect.  Good when scaling timber.

Black oak is the only oak with a yellow inner bark.  It can be found be drilling a hole with a pocket knife, through the bark.  If yellow comes out, its black oak.

White oak growing with pine or hemlock tends to be wormy.

Your best quality timber grows in NE or NW coves.

Bread always falls butter side down.  Oops, got a little carried away with that one. :D
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Ron, I used to know a girl forester who couldnt reach around a 10 inch tree!  We all liked to work with her.

If anyone recalls or finds a post or information within an old post that should be included in the new Knowledge base, please feel free to copy and paste it in under a suitable catagory.

    Thanks!

Jeff I've been trying to think of something that is worthy to post there and I've been coming up empty. ;):-/

But I know that something will pop into this brain sooner or later.

Hay have you ever heard the one about ---na never mind.

    Jeff,
The K.B. is an excellent idea. Hats off to you, Ron and Kevin!

A very good idea and should turn out to be quite an asset as well.

I'm still racking my brain for something and sooner or later I've have something worthy enough to put in there. I just know it. ;D

On the serious side Ron you need to post those tidbits there. I never realized about the white oaks. Thanks for the info. It's the little tidbits that really can be worth alot of knowledge.

Ok I've made a couple of posts in the knowledge base hope they are worthy.
