Spent much of the day plowing snow and repairing equipment in the cold.  In northern Wisconsin we got hit with 18 inches of snow where I am logging and windchill temperatures were -30 degrees this morning. Tonight the temps are predicted to be -18 degrees and windchills even higher than last night.  Overall, with the snow and temperatures it is painful to work out in this weather.  How is it in your area lately?  How do you handle the windchill?

Autocar

It dosen't seem to bother me as long as I am working but let me stop and talk to the landowner or log buyer I just about freeze up. And on the landing I try to set the loader up so my back is to the wind same way bucking logs.

Not that it matters much to me in the winter, but I'm being flooded by a monsoon on a ridge top.  :-\

SD, I hope you don't have to trade that sled in on a canoe ;)

SwampDonkey

Well, I have a 22 foot canoe, but I was thinking an ark. Got one of them to, 10 miles away. :D

what was I thinkin!  I saw that thread, maybe you can stick your thumb out and hitch a ride when she floats by  :)

Sorry ahlkey, wasn't trying to hijack your thread, yesterday was just cold day before was cold (single digits) with winds around 40 sustained around here.  I was helping a freind out with his feedlot while he was on vacation and I solemly vow never to do it again, every time he leaves the weather goes down the drain the day after he is gone.  Get left with a bunch of froze up calves and froze up waterers and all you can do is grin, bear it, and hope the wind ain't blowing tommorow! ;D

-14 f. here now and we got hit over here just like you. The snow was a real pain to move, it wasn't light and fluffy but it wasn't wet either cause it was way to cold to be anything near wet. It is really hard and compact like it would be perfect for making and igloo :D it took me about 12 hours of plowing to get things opened up just at my home and at the farm , almost running out of room to put it already and it was only the 1st good snow of the season. I don't know about this cold and snow thing the older I get the more I ask, why would a person want to have to deal with it :D here I had to spend an whole day yesterday just plowing and that sure wasn't making me any money! :-[

SwampDonkey

You need the boss to plow the roads into the woods for the cutters.

;D  :D  I knew one boss that made the cutters plow there way in to. :D

It is actually -21 below this morning without the windchill.  As far as the BOSS the only thing I did this year was put a Boss V-Plow on my truck which so far is the closest I will ever get to the BOSS plowing.   This morning have an early  appointment so I am not that disappointed that it will be near noon before I can hit the woods. Forecast is for some warming starting later today which will be good.

I'm hoping for about a week of that cold hits my neck of the woods before we get any snow so I can get into the woods. Not a bit of frost in the ground around here, Like SD said everything is soaking wet.

We were soaking wet here had a very wet fall. Things were saturated everywhere and water standing in places you rarely see. Then it got cold! about the 3rd week of november. Before the snow hit there has to be 12" to 14" of ice on most all the lakes. Now it looks like we could get some real snow accumulating this winter. If the temps don't get up above freezing at the very least occaionally than it just keeps adding up and up until... its time to go on vacation somewhere warmer :D 8)

Wet? ....Wet?? It's rained all the darn fall 3 or 4 days every  :-X 'ing week. ::) The last place we cut brush was on a hardwood ridge and water was running out of the woods onto the road for 3 miles.

tell me about it I had to make hay :-[ I am lucky I got all my 2nd crop sold it did not bale up good. It just kept raining and raining until the days got to be so cool then when it quit it still wouldn't dry decent.
It does sound like you got more rain then use though :D you know I would have to say it is better to get to much rain then to little, that is if you live on high ground :D

SwampDonkey

Well that don't work in this case on high ground, I am on high ground. When the ground is saturated, it (water) moves mighty slow.

We had a decent dry summer for a change, in 5 years, then it's made up for it this fall. I would comment about making hay, but I wouldn't want to get a fat lip. All I know is there is a time of year for that to be any good, after that it's not worth cutting and bailing.

Wet here too. Started cutting my fir in Sept.  it was nice and dry. Had to quit in the middle of Oct when it started to rain. And its been raining since. There is more water in the woods than I have seen in a long, long time. Every time it justs starts to freeze up we get another rain. Like yesterday - 50 degrees and rain. Today 10 degrees. At least we dont have much snow yet. Only about 3".

SwampDonkey

To my surprise it about cleared out by noon here, still 45 or so out. I guess we are still on the  warm side of the jet stream. Still got the pump on once every few hours as water is still seeping in. According to the forecast, staying warm and barely freezing temps for the rest of the week. Like in the 30's.

It is worth baling if you need to get it off the field so you have quality hay next year! :D

I got $30 a ton for all the extra hay I had this year. I put one add on craigslist and at least 75 people contacted me. There is a shortage of it here because of all the rain we had everyone is in the same boat so to speak.

SwampDonkey

Warms, fungus and bugs make that old dead hay into mulch for next spring. New hay grows right up through dead compressed (winter snow) hay.  No wasted diesel. ;D
