Gday

Campy with Wdh's comment Im with him  ;) usually larger section sizes and old warf piles/round sections have uneven Mc % throughout the section before milling and when you resaw to smaller sizes you usually have to equalize it before any internal use  some stuff just wants to walk all over the place on you while it dose that in some species Mate  ;)

I believe you'll find that Live Oak is much denser and heavier and will probably sink as it is  denser (green) than water 76 lbs/ft3, while Osage will not although it is right there 62 lb/ft3 so it won't ride high in water.

As far as shrinkage, any wood shrinks.  ;D

Nothing will outlast a yellow cypress and we're talking in a wet climate. ;)

Mate you got to understand I am a Swamp Dweller according to a certain Bloke from your neck of the woods. So getting a hovercraft stuck is not to difficult to accomplish ;D ;D
So the more possibilities for rescue the better ::) ::)

12) No need to dry it is stable and will not shrink

???

I was wondering about the fruit is edible part :D I didn't think you could eat hedgeballs I thought they were just used for lawn bowling :)

No doubt about it though Osage is fine wood.

I wouldn't want to try eating one either. The local name, bodock is a corruption of the french bois d'arc, which is probably a corruption of the osage words for bow wood.

Shrinkage is just about zero which makes it a good choice for making duck calls. That's what most of this log will  be used for.

Osage and Black Locust are about tied for #1 most rot resistant and durable wood in North America.

Does Osage split as easily as Black Locust?

No, just going by numbers in Wood Tech, Osage splits harder.

Cedars, Cypress and Catalpa are the top of the list for very decay resistant in the heartwood. I've seen very old yellow cypress laying in the mud that was like fresh cut once you chipped off the sapwood, smells like carrots. Old red ceder cut in the 40's and lying in mud in the temperate rain forest only lost it's sapwood and you could cut that away into the good heart. We had to measure and tally the volume of any cypress and cedar dead or alive as long as it was in tact.

Iam sorry but that made my day ! :D I once had a fellow bring me 16 foot white oak they were twenty inches on the butt and 8 inches on the top. Tells me he wants 2x6's sawed out of them, they bowed and sprung the headblocks would roll foward there was so much tension. I walked to the house and told my wife we are done custom sawing and that was the last custom job we ever sawed.

One ugly log at Pineywoods for sure. I saw it today. bg

I have problems with sawdust when I turn my mill like that.  Is that the latest Pineywoods invention.  Turns the mill instead of the log  ???

It seems that we all agree that this osage orange log is pretty ugly, full of iron, and highly desirable wood.  When are we going to get some pictures of the day spent sawing it into lumber?  I can hardly wait to see the result and the number of blades used.  Regards, Clark

Bill Gaiche

Sorry MM that i didnt turn the photo before I posted it. Even Pineywoods cant come up with that kind of invention.
That log will make a lot of duck calls for his friend.

Like I tell folks about the turner, if the log don't turn, the mill does, here's proof  ;D

Finally got around to sawing the beast. Bill G stopped by to visit and watch me make lumber from an ugly log. Hit a nail on the second cut. Bill got a hands on demo of how to get nails out of a log. Went through 3 more blades (they got so dull they smoked). Riverman brung his own blades, can't beat that.

Here's the pile of metal, 9 staples, 4 nails, piece of chain, a chunk of copper wire, and about 15 feet of barbed wire

One half of the boards.  The other half is already in my solar kiln.

Some nice figured wood in that ugly log

Looking good so far. Looks like your going to get it sawed up afterall. Keep us posted and maybe some photos later of the projects made from the old ugly log. bg

Duck calls and turkey calls, he makes stuff that's really a work of art. Got a few nice bowl blanks also.
