So they are making you pay $25 for what? MN has a two tiered program, Logsafe and MLEP. I think the logsafe focuses on safety and MLEP (Minnesota Logger Education Program) focuses on the professional practice, proper technique, etc. You have to have both to buy and cut state wood, and liability insurance plus workmans comp for employees. That's just for state wood though, there are no requirements for private wood.

The $25 is for my wood producers license to allow me to cut wood. A Old timberjack what do you get for a tri axle load of log length firewood?

I guess what I was getting at is they are charging you a fee for nothing in return, but permission. I hate that. But, truth be told, i'd prefer that to the 2 days of training I will have to take plus, I think it costs about $300-400 a year for membership :(

Pretty much a license to cut on private land better to have it and be on the safe side plus it's only $25 bucks.

Is it used to track wood flow? Or just lets them know your a logger? Here truckers have to fill out tracking slips for wood off woodlots and crown has a similar system.

The license is done so the Gov't can keep track of you, they can make rules that you have to follow or risk losing your license, so they can collect money for the coffers (form of taxing), and use your information if more control is desired in the future. Force holders to take Gov't training courses, some of which just put Gov't people to work for larger and larger agencies. Forces people to make annual reports on their activities. adinfinitum

It is a reason there is a push to license drug dealers.  Without a license it is not easy to arrest or control them. They know how many there are. Etc., etc.  Much the same as the desire/push to license gun owners. Seems so harmless in the beginning. Then comes the media that wants to publish all the gun owners names and addresses so everyone knows who has them or who does not. Then comes the hounddogs.

Seems licensing is the first basic step to Gov't control.

This is just a for instance, and I know the license thing in RI is probably totally unrelated and might not even serve any purpose other than to take a money away form the working stiff to make a government job. Here in NB, our system is used to deter wood theft which is now less common (probably because of markets more than anything, thus not as many free spirits out there cutting). It also allows us to keep in focus our AAC of each board area. It is helpful in making sure all levy for private wood it collected which goes toward woodlot management, courses, and the business of marketing wood and administration. The administration of the slip system for woodlots is done by the marketing boards and they make an annual submission of slip books to the Forest Products Commission who oversee the boards' activities. Our marketing boards are not the government, it's woodlot owners. We don't have to pay a for a license to cut wood on private land and I will do anything to fight against any notion. It just seems to me someone is always coming up with some nonsense to chase someone out of business so there are fewer players.

With a drivers license they test you to make sure you can operate a car before they give you one.

Here in Ma. a license is $15 and you need to take a test the first time. The test is on BMPs and slash and wetland regulations that pertain to logging operations. To keep your license you must renew it every year ( $15 ) and do continuing education in forestry and timber harvesting related training over 3 consecutive years. You need 9 hours of credits of which 3 must be on Ma. regulations.
