Nice bench, it inspires me.  Do you do iron work too?  I noticed your through rod and hold down.  I take it there are multiple holes for adjustment up or down.

Are you talking about Northwoods bench? I like it too, especially the multi-purpose part. :)

I was.  I'm sorry, I get my eye on something, start talking and believe everyone knows exactly what I'm talking about.

This is a whatzit, I have several guesses but that's about it.  It sits up at my inlaws cabin for a decoration and I'm sure someone here (if not everyone) will know what it is.

Sorry, I know it doesn't have to do with woodworking, just going by the thread title.

It's an old style juicer, we had one just like it when I was a kid. You're missing the bottom piece though.

Yup I 2nd that, we had one just like it when I was a kid too.

The Workbench Book by Landis is a great book :)

Chris, yes I have a blacksmith shop that is full of everything I need to do some serious iron work, sure wish I had more time to get out there I enjoy the heck out of banging on a hot piece of iron and turning it into something useful.

Thanks, that was my first guess and I figured something had to be missing, I need to get a few more pics my FIL has some pretty neat old stuff up there, everything else I could identify though.

Blue Sky

Hi Dave, Blue Sky here.  Boy, looks like you got a real nice, spacious work shop there.  Plenty of space and looks warm too.  Me, I got to work outside in an unheated covered open stall.  At least there is no taxes on it.  Years ago, I cut enough 12x12, 8x8 and 4x6 to make a 36x48 foot workshop.  On the off chance, I went down to the Town offices and asked what the taxes would be on this structure.  You could here my jaw hit the floor when they told me how much it was going to be.  I just wanted a warm cozy place to play wood in in the winter.  I ended up resawing everything instead.

Dave, i hope this is kosher.  I just go a call from Williams college. The college is embarking on cutting down 25 White Pines, each around 25"DBH.  What they are looking for is someone in the area there to come on campus with a portable sawmill and mill these things.  I told the contact person I would try to use the forum to connect him up with some one interested in getting involved in this project.  They would want to use this as a teaching tool, i.e. the milling would be observed by various groups of students, etc.  Ultimately, the pine is going to be used on campus.  My tele # is 413-624-3645.  Otherwise , just contact me here.  I thank you.

Bluesky, might want to hit edit button in lower right of post (pencil/paper icon) and take out your phone number and use a private message to Dave with your number. Keeps the world from viewing your personal phone number. ;)

Blue Sky, we don't go portable with our mill, it's not registered. Also, we will be bolting a 24' extension on very soon. Thanks for the heads up. There should be a few portable guys up that way that would be interested. I'll put the word out. I'll be talking to my architect soon, and he knows several portable mill owners.

I only have a couple of pics of my progress so far on the shaving horse. Tapered sliding dovetail batten for the rear legs:

I'll trim it to width. I should be able to tap the batten out to knock down the horse for travel.

What wood is that?  Is it from a reclaimed timber?  Looks nice.
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!

Reclaimed bridge crane timbers from Vermont. They were 12"x14"x50', with a 6"x12" bolted underneath. We tried to saw one up for flooring, but the bolt holes made that too wasteful. SYP. We have another project for them to be used whole.

The bolt holes I'd leave in the flooring.  Just fill them with table top epoxy and it would be a great feature.  Would give it character.  Thankfully you are reusing it for something good.
