i have a mtd splitter and it spits out hydro fluid from the vent hole. wondering if someone knows what causes this. i tried changing the filter and fluid but still spits. it mostly spits when ram is retracted.

That indicates the reservoir is over filled. The level should be checked with the ram fully retracted.

i have an older lay down type splitter and it will do the same thing from time to time, and it has no filter on it.

i have noticed that it will not do it if i face it more downhill than level. if i put the tank downhill at all it will do it every stroke.

I would agree with sawguy21: the reservoir is over-filled or there is air in the system that needs to be bled.

thanks for suggestions..i'll check the level on it..i always wonder when you check the level should the dipstick be all the way screwed in or not. as for the bleeding any air in the system, how would you go about that??? i kinda was thinking that it would do that on its own?? would i loosen the steel tubing on the cylinder while operating to bleed???

sawguy21

The ram will not run smoothly if air is in the system. If you suspect this might be the problem, cycle the ram with no load several times.

check all the fittings &clamps on the suction side of the pump a tiny air leak there will cause the oil to foam and spew from the resevoir vent

I had one that was filled completely when the oil level was 1 inch from the top of the tank

I would guess the dip stick would have to be screwed in to check the oil level. But that is only a guess. No owners manual? Maybe check on line for one. Mine Cub Cadet level should be 3 inches from the top.
When you say it over flows,it in white in color or just kinda oozes out of the vent hole?  If it's kinda white and foaming than you have air. But if it just kinda flows, oozes out than just over full.

again thanks to all for the help. i think it might have been a combo of to much fluid and air.

I agree. Also check the oil with the dip stick screwed in all the way.
