Some saw docs will come to the mill and troubleshoot.  I know I've been called to a few mills and got them running in very little time for some minor, but troublesome problems.

357blacksmith is right on the money.

Hammering on a piece of cold steel changes its crystal structure and thus its properties (making it brittle)

When I bought my mill the bigger edger blades you can see the HAZ heat effected zone a metallurgist will tell you.  The guy ran them without water and created a dark orange burnt spot on the blades.   I have to send them down to Mobile Dimension eventually and they have a guy to re hammer them.

Also with a lot of this steel coming out of china there are hard spots in the metal.  If ever buying blades or steel buy it virgin made out of the states.  A local shop has these Hougen Rotacut  cutters and he goes through two a day over the bloody well hard spots.

aws.org has a good forum as well.  "American welding society" Its a good thing to learn about different kinds of metals and the right process on how to weld them and the right working manner and safety to do it.
