I have noticed that most rafters do not have an overhang.I would like to have a 2' overhang on my frame so I came up with this.

Tell me if this looks ok.The rafters are7x7x16'.They will span12' with a queen post midway,3x6 purlins with a tin roof.

What is the snowload where this thing is going?  I have a 3ft overhang which creates a 40" drip-line on my frame here in NH and did it very similar to your drawing but my rafters are 8x10 with a 10-12 pitch.

Overhang is good in my opinion and why couldn't you brace back to the post if you had to?  Thats my plan, but in the three winters it has been up no troubles.

I've had a similar issue.  Overhangs are good and you see a lot of old buildings with overhangs.  But, most of the modern timberframed buildings with principle rafters that end at the plate.  In your drawing you are high-posting just a bit which transfers some of the thrust to the post and it is hard to make a true truss system by high posting.  But, if your posts are sized adequately it can be done, sure.  You see a lot of high posted buildings that have stood for a very long time.  The trouble that I have been having is to make a true truss with an overhang with all of the joinery exposed because I want people to be able to see and appreciate the timberframed joinery too.  And the best that I have come up with so far is a common principle rafter and then make the overhang with the planking or sips if you want to use sips.  A cornice detail may be the answer too.

For the record, I have 8x10 posts as well and a 4 ft knee wall so the post is a bit much.  I helped deal with thrust by planning my internal partitions upstairs to line up with the rafters

The tail beyond the post should be 7x7 not reduced as shown.....
