I have had a real problem for the last couple of years trying to find tadpoles for the grandkids.   :(  There just don't seem to be many frogs around anymore.  Anyone else have this problem or noticed a decline in the frog population?
A very wise man once told me . Grand children are great, we should have had them first

we have noticed this for a long time here in the states.   with permeable skin the amphibians are first to get the chemical by product issues.   when I was a kid it seems there were a LOT of frogs in any water holding depression.

a couple years ago I found a leopard frog on my place out away from water like usual for them.   they hunt other frogs for dinner...   hadnt seen on since the 70's

Still lots of little frogs around here, but the leopard frog is getting scarce. That being said I have seen a few of those on my old logging trails since my land has lots of water pools and there wouldn't be anything dumped or sprayed on the land. It's almost impossible to avoid stepping on frogs I've seen around this year. They wait until your about to put your number 11 down before they leap into the nearby pool of water. Lots of little snakes around this year to and they eat a lot of frogs as do blue herons and such. I have even seen toads in the lawn grass this year, since a lot of the yard is under shade trees. And most summers we get lots of rainwater.

If you look close there, you can see the ground is water saturated.

about a month ago, when my grass was 8 in tall from rain everyday, their was tons of frogs and toads.Im about 800 to 1000ft? from a river

at my parents house, about 25 miles south of here,  lot of run-off goes by the creek on the property line from all the farms in the area.       we have seen several 3 legged frogs, and albino frogs their,  where the front leg is to come out, their is no bump, just smooth skin.        kinda makes you think...? What chemicals are the farmers using?

red oaks... it wasnt an attack

i cut my other post short cause i wanted to go to sleep.
My stepdad had brought it to the DNR (bout 8? yrs ago) they asked him where he found it ect, and they stated it was most likely farm runoff, i dont remember what chemical they suspected. They kept the frog too..lol

no i wasn't blaming , when anything gets messed up the simple finger goes at the farmer.the dnr  or the epa ect. lets look at all the corps. that spew toxic @!## into the air, on the ground or in the drain which makes its way down stream.
farms now have to have a nutirent plan, meaning they must control runoff from barnyards or holding areas, can only apply a certain amount of manure per acre. at the same time your local septic pumping sevice which needs a lience to pump can take that sludge and dump it on any vacant laand . does this seem right? who knows what ends up in someones septic tank that makes its way into the rain water runoff.
just remember the more aand tighter restrictions applied to farmers the higher the cost for products will become, last time i checked we cant live without food ;)if i remember correct back in the day the dnr sprayed lake shores with ddt to kill weeds what affects on water life did that do?

Just to be right, the DDT killed bugs and mosquitoes, not weeds ;)

And banning it has had good and bad consequences IMO

We have frogs in abundance on both our properties 200 miles apart. You can't walk onto the detour property in the spring and summer and early fall with out seeing many small frogs of varying species. In Harrison, we have at least 4 varieties around the house, plus toads.

I am sitting here reading this and my wife says "What are you smirking about? I said remember when we were at Boggabilla and the frog?"

My wife used to have a fear of frogs. We were in Court in an old stinking hot courthouse in outback NSW. My Wife was the court officer sitting down in front of the Magistrate and I was a prison officer waiting to pick up anyone bail refused.

I went outside to the outhouse and there was this big Green Tree Frog about 5inches, I put it in a yellow official envelope went back in the court, handed it to the Police Prosecutor to give to my wife, she opened it, screamed and through it in the air, I thought she'd just give me a "Wait till we get home look"  :o the Magistrate had watched the lot, I had one of those Why did I do it, I am gone now thoughts, I survived and remained professional forever after. ;)

WD now that's funny!

We have as many frogs as ever here in the heart of farm country. This old wives tale and ethanol bashing never gets old on the farm.
