Just finished making a porch glider for the house. I've had this kit for some time,
just to many things got in the way. It's made from Cotton wood and Ash. The arms and
frame are Cotton wood and the seat is Ash. The ash is off color by the ants that where
in the center of the log I think. The finish is 3 coats of Varnish and then scuffed out. I
will take it inside when it rains and this winter. It took me 2 weeks off and on to finish.
I know Cotton wood and Ash are not the best choice for outdoor furniture but that's
what i had on hand.

Wow!  That ash really jumps out at you.  Beautiful!

I love porch swings and gliders! Yours is a very fine one indeed.  ;)

That's quite a project. :)

I have not seen cottonwood  finished before.  Do you have a closeup picture you can share showing the cottonwood grain?
I do what the little voices in my wife's head tell me to do.

Thanks for the reply and will take some close up of the Cottonwood and post later.

Nice looking glider. Ash is nice wood to work with. :)

Metalspinner, here are some close up of the Cottonwood. I had it cut about 8 years
ago into 2 1/2" thick slabs. The finish is Old Masters super varnish and i put 3 coats
on.

Thanks, Sawwood.

We don't have cottonwood here so I'm not familiar with it.  The grain looks nice with interesting color and figure.  Is that some ray fleck I see upper left of pic 2?

Cottonwood seems to have a "blah" reputation.  Why is that?

Some of the cottonwood does have a plan look and some have what you see in my
wood. Also the wood was down for some time befor we had it cut so the spalting
was from laying on the ground and from the long ir drying Thanks for the nice reply.

That quartersawn grain with the color is very nice.

Your wood joints are all nice and flush and nice job carving/shaping the arms. Not being familiar with cottonwood, I'm assuming the grain and color is much the same as aspen. The spalt really adds to a piece of wood that likely looks kinda white and plane otherwise.  Of course the right finish brings the grain out even in white woods. ;)
