I have 800 trees to plant.  500 of one species, 200 of another and 100 of a third.  Is there a formula by which I can compute how to space them evenly distributed in a 270' X 280'  fenced rectangle?  The trees will be spaceed 10' apart in the grid. Thanks.

Looks like you have 270 x 280 = 75,600 sq. ft. of area and 800 trees, so each tree will have 94.5 sq ft of space. If you plant a tree 10 x 10, each tree will take 100 sq ft. . Maybe 26 rows (10 ft from each fence) will mean 31  trees in each row. Several ways to compute it.

I have walnuts planted on 10 by 10, and they are easy to care for  with room to mow and spray in between.

On the 270 foot side = (27) 10x10 plots.

The <> means a 10 foot row for easy access without driving over tree roots and such. Starting on the 270 foot side:

5=one of the 500, 2 = one of the 200, 1 = one of the 100. You repeat the 1st pattern backwards if you need pollen/male/female on the 100.

5 5 2 5 2 5 5 1 <> 1 5 5 2 5 2 5 5 <> 5 5 2 5 2 5 5 1 <>

This will yield 672. If you want the full 800 and do not care about access between rows:

5 5 2 5 2 5 5 1 2 1 5 5 2 5 2 5 5  5 5 2 5 2 5 5 1 5 5

After 28 rows

(17 - 5) * 28 = 476 of 500
(7 - 2) * 28 = 196 of 200
(3 -1) * 28 = 84 of 100

All maxed out.

Btw: If you do not want any two trees next to each other of the 200 and 100, then reverse the next row

5 5 1 5 5 2 5 2 5 5 etc.

UNCLEBUCK

beenthere, hey you got any helpful tips on walnut planting, I read everything the state of minnesota provided and I got 500 black walnut trees to plant about may 1st , they are about 18 inches tall and it looks like 150 trees per acre , sounds like they need alot more space than pine trees . I will be long gone before they are harvested but I am excited about doing these little plots of trees every year . thanks  :P

Some of my thoughts on planting walnuts are in this thread (see 9/22/03)

Simply put, I would plant only the better seedlings (not the runts), I would be sure the roots were not twisted up, and would stick with the 10 x 10 spacing.  I have enjoyed putzing with them, and hope the grandkids get to enjoy them too.
