Cutting Edge

Hello All,  Newb to the forum, first post on here also-

I have a 455 Rancher and I wondered if anyone has thown a 28" bar on one.  Thought about using a skiptooth chain (worried bout vibration) and figured a full comp chain would ruin the power.  Maybe to much for the saw chassis too, but to go bigger even used is out of the question $$$

Gonna be cuttin hard and soft woods with it.

That saw uses the small mount bar, going to be tough finding one over 24". Far too much for your 455 anyway. You need that much step up to at least 70cc..

Baileys carries a 28"er...and can get a skiptooth chain.  I have an old Mac 7-10A (man what a workhorse) thought bout using it but the Husky is so much easier on the body.  Thought the skiptooth may be to much "grab and cut" for the smaller chassis to handle.

i bougt a 460 rancher last year . it had a 24 inch bar. it didnt have enough power to pull the 24 very well. i put a 20 inch bar on it. now its a pretty good fire wood saw.i would think a 28 inch bar might be to much  for a 455.

It would be a good liming set up, but if you put that in a big block of wood, you'd really have to work with it, to keep from burning the saw up, she isn't made to pull that much chain.

I wouldnt even think of it. It will be out of balance in weight and power

To say nothing of the fact that the oiler could never keep up with oiling a 28" bar and chain. Never, ever happen.

rwthom279, Its a little over kill with that size power head, they like 18 to 20 inch bars. Tim

A Mac 7-10 is not all that heavy .Besides it will handle a 28" all day every day .You'll wring the guts out that Huskey with that much bar .

Now here's something to those who have never ran them .A 70cc McCulloch will not outrun the average 70 cc saw made today .What it will do is pull like a Georgia mule --all day.

Something like a rancher which is primarily a less expensive firewood cutter does okay but it was never made to run extended periods under extreme loads ,the Mac was .

Thanks for the input from everyone...confirmed my suspiscions.  Good saw and I don't wanna tear it up....never hurts to ask.  Reckon I'm in the market for a larger power head if theres one to be found at the right price.  Time to tune up the ole 7-10 and get-er set-up with the goodies.  Have several old macs.  They may not be as fast as todays heads, but its like comparing apples and oranges.  TORQUE!!!  gotta love it.  But everyone knows how tempermental starting a Mac can be when they throw a fit! Grrrrrrr.

Anyone gotta 28" bar and chain for the  Mac laying around?
