Beside the thickness and sprocket of the bar is there and advantage to having a bar that is slighly curved on top and bottom rather than staright. Does the shape of the bar have anything to do with the performance?

No, keep it in good order(file off the burs and keep it greesed) every time you have a chance. If you can keep your chain sharp the bar will last a lot longer obviously because you will not lean on it or dog it in the cut.

I personally like wide bars, but they are all narrow now.  wide bars cut straighter but tend to pinch up easier i guess.

different tips...  their is a few for carving ect.   your really not to be using the tip in cutting up trees/ felling .   usin just the tip in cutting firewood, burns out the bar, also sets up the chance of a kickback

That design of bar is often refered to as a "salmon belly " .

One idea is it takes less power to pull a chain in a circle so to speak than in a narrow shape as most bars are made today .

They still use a type such as this for one cut type saw racing .For multiple cuts like we do on the east coast they are at a disadvantage because of the thickness .You have to pass that thick wide bar through the cut before advancing to the next which takes up time .

Another thing is a wide nosed bar is slightly more prone to kick back .

Belly bars are used in racing / hot saw competitions due to the fact that you can run much less chain tension. Less tension = Less friction.

On single cuts yes ,on multiple cuts not usually  as a rule .

On race bars you can order just about any thing you desire through Cannon .Belly ,narrow ,even with a genuine roller nose if you want .Costs a plenty though . :o

Much ado about bars IMO .Most decently made bars will give long service life if they get oiled .

I'm not certain how much a person can believe about information over the internet .I've for example heard stories of Canadian cutters who could wear out a bar in a week and my only thought was they must have been cutting sand stone .
