Keep an eye on the dog-bone struts that hold the drive axles in alignment.  I have heard that several of the recent releases have had problems with them soon after they were put in service.  If you needed a strong winch for your operation, then look no further.  Good Luck, and Regards, Clark

Nice setup, only problem with ex-military equipment is they keep saying feed me,feed me.Very little concern for fuel economy in the military.Don't scratch that baby all up now. Frank C.

One of my hats some years ago was owning a wrecker service. It was a built up Jeep 3/4 ton 4X4 with a Buick 350. Big mechanical winch with a little over 200' of cable. The suspension was beef up a good bit and it had a tall push bumper of about 5/8" steel with rubber pads. It was one of the more handy tools I owned. I ended up using it more on the farm than out on the road. I hauled all manner of farm equipment  either winched up on my trailer or some smaller heavy stuff just on hook at the back of the wrecker. I was buying and selling older farm equipment at that time and was buying and selling a lot of scrap too. It was really nice to snake just the cable back into some overgrown lot and then letting it drag some rusted hulk out without having to drive back into a lot of  crappy stuff and maybe cut a tire. I'm having a memory lapse at the moment but I believe the bed was a Holms. I also used it on logs a lot. It was also about ideal to pull wagon loads of grain to the local elevator 2 at a time (they will not allow you to pull 3 here). I sold it (stupidly) because when I quit the wrecker business my insurance company at that time (the #$%&'s) refused to insure it at anything less than the high priced "recovery" vehicle rate unless I completely removed the boom assembly. After I eventually dropped that company I asked my new (and current) company what they would have charged me to keep it covered and they said that as long as I was not doing commercial towing that it would not have cost me any more than any of my other trucks... Grrrr. The same old company also wanted an arm and both legs to cover a farm semi if I bought one (so I didn't buy one I had found at a real bargain). I again asked the new company about a farm semi and they told me that It would have cost me only a tiny bit more than my straight truck.  Grrrr again...
I really miss that big winch and the boom.

That should do it  ;D

Along those lines, I've always dreamed about owning a Unimog some day for forest work.

I'm planning on putting a shortened dropside with a dump kit on it when everything comes together.  The unimog is a great piece of machinery but it would take a lotto winner to own one .
