Working up the plans for TF cabin,  might bump up the roof on one portion to allow for a loft.

Any issue with joining the plate and ridge to the posts and king?   I will use some type of tension joint.  Probably a 1/2 dovetail thru mortise with a hardwood wedge.

Other ideas to accomplish this?

There shouldn't be any tension in the ridge to post joint. (corrected my error)

But you're going to need braces going in the gable to gable direction. Your current drawings don't show any.

You should do a brace from each corner post to the plates and maybe the king to the ridge and/or the other end to the post.

Really? No tenon in the post to secure the ridge beam?  Did I read this correctly?  What would be the reason for omiting this type of joint at that junction?  Also, would there be a different type of joint suitable in this case?

I'm also wondering about the ground floor post's placement... shouldn't it be under the king on the middle truss... like the ends?

Jim,

Do you mean no tension in ridge to post?

I believe there will be tension in the tall post to tie beam joint on the taller portion of the building.

I will put in the braces, just didn't put them on the drawing yet.

grweldon,

Ah, I didn't notice, actually there are two different drawings below, on with the ground post under the king, the other with two posts that are offset from the king.   In the end, I opted for the two posts (top drawing).

I only viewed the images you posted, not the sketchup file.  I don't have sketchup installed... it's a company computer and I don't have admin rights...
